Sehestedt is shaped by the Kiel Canal: Its construction between 1887 and 1895 divided the village into northern and southern parts. Canal history, manor-house architecture and a variety of trails give the village several facets—from views of the waterway to natural and local history.

Canal history and ferry crossing

The ferry in Sehestedt crosses the Kiel Canal free of charge for motor vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. It is located at canal kilometre 75.331—a precise reference point for anyone including the canal in their day’s plans. As operating conditions can change, it is worth checking the current ferry service before setting out.

There is a snack bar and a market meeting point at the canal ferry landing. A motorhome parking area is also located next to the ferry, offering views of the Kiel Canal and ocean liners. Here, the waterway, ferry connection and convenient stops all come together in one place.

Manor estate, museum and memorials

Gut Sehestedt stands on the site of an old moated castle, which was surrounded by a moat until 1865. The estate complex includes a manor house dating from 1728. Three thatched half-timbered buildings on the estate have been listed since 1996. Their different architectural styles and dates make the ensemble a distinctive part of local history.

The House of History displays historical sources, original objects and short films; special exhibitions are also regularly held. If you would like to see a particular exhibition, you can check the current programme in advance. St Peter and St Paul’s Church offers a different architectural accent, with its wooden tower and predominantly Late Classical interior dating from 1829.

A memorial stone commemorates a parachute accident involving the Bold Guard near Sehestedt. Residents of Sehestedt and Scots unveiled it on 27 July 1975. Alongside the historical subjects presented at the House of History, the stone offers another perspective on local history, extending remembrance beyond buildings alone.

Three circular trails, three themes

The 4.2-kilometre Village Loop leads from the Danish Memorial to the ferry landing, then follows the canal to KanalTreff. The Short Forest Loop is a 3.0-kilometre woodland walk: it passes unusual trees and wetland habitats, and the return leg runs between the canal and the forest.

At 4.8 kilometres, the Energy Park Loop is the longest of the three routes described. It leads to the Energy Park site, where you can learn more about renewable energy. Before setting out, it is worth checking current trail conditions, as route information can change.

The distances and themes are easy to compare: the Short Forest Loop connects woodland and wetland habitats, the Village Loop takes you to local landmarks and along the canal, and the Energy Park Loop focuses on renewable energy. You can choose your walk based on which facet of Sehestedt you would like to explore, rather than comparing only the distances.

Sehestedt in the wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde travel destination

Sehestedt is part of the wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde travel destination; the figures below describe the district as a whole. Rendsburg-Eckernförde has 55 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline and a signposted 1,000-kilometre cycle network. The district is home to four nature parks. The 180-kilometre Nature Park Hiking Trail runs through them. Its section in Hüttener Berge Nature Park reaches Sehestedt after 36.5 kilometres.

The Kiel Canal also has a regional dimension in Rendsburg-Eckernförde: about 70 kilometres, or two-thirds of the canal, run through the district. The trails and ferry landing in Sehestedt are part of this wider regional setting; the local circular trails, meanwhile, offer specific options for exploring the village on foot, each with a different theme.
