Discover Warder: lake, nature park and sculptures
Accommodation in Warder
Warder brings together Lake Warder and the landscape of Westensee–Obere Eider Nature Park with cultural highlights in the town. The Nature Park Trail passes through the town; Warder Stone Park and the old watermill in Alt Mühlendorf add two attractions of very different character to the nature experience. This raises a practical question as you plan your trip: should your stay focus mainly on the nature park and lake, or would you also like to include outdoor art and the town’s attractions? You can take these priorities into account when choosing your destination before looking for accommodation.
Nature Park and Lake Warder
Warder is located in Westensee–Obere Eider Nature Park, and its setting by Lake Warder and in a natural landscape gives it a strong connection to the outdoors. The Nature Park Trail passes through the town, offering a way to include some activity in your trip. The trail and the lake each provide a different focus: the trail passes through Warder, while Lake Warder and the nature park landscape offer a connection to the water and the surrounding countryside. If you would like to bring different interests together, you can combine nature and outdoor activities with cultural discoveries in the area.
Sculptures and the watermill
Warder Stone Park is an open-air sculpture gallery between Warder and Alt Mühlendorf; it can be visited at Gut Seehof by the lake. It adds an artistic focus under the open sky to the nature park landscape. As the stone park is privately operated, check visiting arrangements before you go. The old watermill in Alt Mühlendorf is also one of Warder’s attractions. The sculpture gallery and the mill offer different ways to explore the area: outdoor art on the one hand, and the old watermill on the other. This makes it possible to include more than one theme in your plans if you have several interests.
Warder in the context of the nature park
The nature park setting is also evident on a larger scale across the wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde destination. Rendsburg-Eckernförde district has four nature parks. A substantial part of them consists of nature and landscape conservation areas, and they provide habitats for a diverse range of animal and plant life. The 180-kilometre-long Nature Park Trail passes through all four nature parks; in Warder, it runs through the town. This places the local section of the trail in the context of a longer regional route. The district also has a signposted cycle network spanning 1,000 kilometres. Hiking and cycling are two different ways to include the nature park region in your travel plans.
More landscapes in Rendsburg-Eckernförde
The wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde destination also encompasses other types of landscape: the district has 55 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline. In fine weather, the 98-metre-high Aschberg offers panoramic views reaching as far as the Kiel Canal, Eckernförde Bay and the state capital, Kiel. These examples offer a broader view of the destination alongside Warder’s local focus on Lake Warder and the nature park. When choosing where to go, it is therefore worth distinguishing between Warder as your specific destination and the wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde destination. The Warder exit on the A7 is in Altmühlendorf, a district of Warder.
Cultural destinations in Rendsburg-Eckernförde district
The cultural history of Rendsburg-Eckernförde district offers a different perspective from Warder’s attractions. Rendsburg’s old town dates back to the 13th century and is still characterized by medieval buildings. The Dutch-style windmill in Groß Wittensee dates from 1874. The regional perspective thus spans medieval urban history, a place of remembrance and a 19th-century windmill.
