Ulsnis lies right on Gunnebyer Noor and the Schlei, surrounded by a wooded landscape. Water and woodland shape the village; Ulsnis is also part of a Natura 2000 site. This offers different ways to plan your trip: time for swimming at the waterside spots, nature experiences, boats and local history. The kind of trip you have in mind can help you find accommodation that suits your plans.

Water, woodland and special habitats

A salt marsh lies at the end of the path from Ulsnisstrand to the Schlei. It is considered a rare habitat for characteristic plant and animal species. You can explore Ulsnis and the wider region on foot or by bike, taking in the landscape beyond the shoreline. The combination of Noor, Schlei and woodland gives nature lovers several different ways to enjoy their stay.

Bathing spots and boating

Ulsnisstrand is a bathing area right on the Schlei. Ships on the Schlei also stop there. If you are planning a trip, check the departure times in advance. Hagab Beach has parking and toilets. The Hagab bathing area is considered suitable for families with small children—a specific distinction when choosing where to swim. Several hundred metres north of Hagab, another stretch of beach welcomes dog owners. If the exact beach rules matter for your visit, check them locally.

There are specific options for boaters, too: Schlei-Bootsclub Ulsnis-Steinfeld offers moorings for canoes, rowboats and dinghies at Ulsnis-Stauertwedt. At Ulsnisstrand, there is a slipway and visitor moorings for larger boats. Check the availability of moorings before your trip. Bathing, boat trips and boating activities each offer a different focus for planning your day; a quick look at your own interests can help you decide between them.

Village history, church and art

The Kius-Ulsnis-Steinfeld Village Museum presents local and social history through objects from homes, farms and craft workshops. Exhibits include objects from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as a camera bought in 1898. If you are interested in everyday history, the museum offers a different way to discover the region than the shoreline or the water.

St. Wilhadi also has some remarkable historical details: parts of the church are believed to be the oldest surviving church fabric in Angeln; the portal is dated to around 1150. Inside the church is an Early Gothic corpus of Christ, dated to 1230/40. After spending more than 100 years in the Flensburg Museum, it returned there in 2012. The village is also home to the Giant of Ulsnis, a sculpture in the shape of a giant. The church, museum and sculpture add cultural discoveries to the natural and waterside experiences.

In the wider destination of Schleswig-Flensburg

In the wider destination of Schleswig-Flensburg, Schlei Nature Park reveals a broader variety of landscapes: gentle hills, forests, hedgerow landscapes, rapeseed and grain fields, as well as sandy beaches and bathing coves. The Schlei’s brackish waters provide a habitat for numerous endangered bird species. Guided nature tours are offered in the nature park; the Viking-Frisian Way, the Ox Road and 15 signposted themed cycle routes run through the landscape. Another regional cycling route is the 25-kilometre SchleiUferTörn, a circular tour around the middle section of the Schlei starting in Arnis. These regional options complement Ulsnis’s specific bathing, nature and cultural attractions without implying that they are offered by the nature park.
