Boren combines its location on the Schlei with a range of cultural attractions. The Romanesque St. Mary’s Church, Lindauhof Manor House and the Lindaunis Bridge span architectural history and engineering, alongside art galleries and a connection to film.

Church, Manor House and Art

Boren’s St. Mary’s Church is a Romanesque brick church dating from the first third of the 13th century. Its restoration emphasised its original Romanesque appearance. Inside are a medieval granite baptismal font, a crucifix and an altarpiece from the 16th century. There is also a Late Gothic-style entrance area and a separate wooden tower. The church thus brings together its Romanesque foundations and later architectural and artistic touches.

Another historical landmark is Lindauhof: within the municipality of Boren, on the Dänisch Lindau estate, stands a manor house dating from the 15th century. Lindauhof is also associated with the filming of the television series “Der Landarzt.” This connection to film adds a media perspective to the architectural history and appeals to travellers who also associate the area with the series.

Art is also part of Boren’s cultural offerings. There are three art galleries with exhibition spaces in the municipality; the number may change. So check the latest local information about the galleries before visiting.

The Schlei setting and a technical landmark

The Lindaunis Bridge is a landmark in Boren and a combined railway and road bascule bridge with a steel truss box-girder structure. Unlike the church and manor house, it draws attention to the relationship between transport function and design. A replacement bridge is planned, so its appearance may change for visitors in the future.

Boren lies in southern Angeln, on the Schlei, in a landscape shaped by agriculture and with access to the water. The municipality is considered a residential and holiday area. When choosing where to stay, you can therefore weigh up whether the cultural sites or the Schlei landscape should be more important to you.

Schleswig-Flensburg in a broader perspective

The wider travel destination of Schleswig-Flensburg offers additional, distinct cultural and natural attractions. Haithabu and the Danevirke have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018. The historic memorial site and Idstedt Museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the uprising of 1848 and the Battle of Idstedt.

The landscape and nature also define this broader regional perspective: at 773 hectares, Geltinger Birk is the largest nature reserve in the Schleswig-Flensburg district. It has well-developed paths and guided walks that share information about the local flora and fauna. More than 130 bird species can be observed on Holnis, including around 65 breeding species. Alongside Boren’s cultural attractions, the wider travel destination thus offers other distinct reasons to visit for nature and history enthusiasts.
