Mohrkirch: Hedgerows, rapeseed fields and paths in rural Angeln
Accommodation in Mohrkirch
Mohrkirch showcases rural Angeln in a landscape of hedgerows, green meadows, woods and yellow rapeseed fields. The Mohrkirch Au flows through the village towards a former watermill. Wooded areas and open spaces together shape the character of the landscape, while the watercourse adds its own distinctive touch. If you enjoy combining nature with outdoor activities, Mohrkirch offers a clear focus: a rural setting and opportunities to explore on foot, by bike or on horseback.
On foot, by bike or on horseback
Mohrkirch and its surroundings offer walking trails, country paths and community paths for long walks and bike rides. You can make your stay as active as you like: a longer walk offers a different focus from a bike ride, and both are options here. Horse riding is also available locally. Two riding stables offer riding, horse boarding and riding lessons. If you plan to use horse boarding or take lessons, check the specific services and their availability directly before your trip. Choosing between walking, cycling and riding lets you focus on the type of activity you prefer.
Plan a visit to the village museum
The village museum is open from April to September on Wednesdays from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.; visits at other times can be arranged by telephone. These regular weekly hours make it easy to include a museum visit in your day’s plans. If you would like to visit outside these opening hours, arrange your visit by phone. Check the opening hours before you travel so you can fit a museum visit in with your other plans.
This makes it easier to decide what to focus on during your stay.
In the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination
Beyond Mohrkirch’s landscape, the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination offers a range of nature experiences. At 773 hectares, Geltinger Birk is the largest nature reserve in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg. Well-maintained paths and guided walks offer insights into the local flora and fauna. More than 130 bird species can be observed on Holnis, including around 65 breeding species. The peninsula is also the northernmost point of Schleswig-Holstein’s young moraine landscape. In the Schlei Nature Park, rolling hills, woods, hedgerow landscapes, and rapeseed and grain fields alternate with sandy beaches and swimming coves. The Schlei’s brackish-water areas provide a habitat for numerous threatened bird species. The district’s landscapes also include the Flensburg Fjord, with its unspoilt steep coasts and beaches, and the Eider-Treene-Sorge river landscape.
The wider destination also offers a range of cultural and historical themes. Haithabu and the Danevirke have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 2018; more than 25 kilometres of the Danevirke rampart still remain today. The historic memorial site and Idstedt Museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the 1848 uprising and the Battle of Idstedt. The region’s film history offers another perspective: from 1986 to 2012, Kappeln served as a filming location for the television series “Der Landarzt” under the name “Deekelsen.” Arnis and the Schlei served as filming locations for a German film adaptation of “Five Friends.”
The wider Schleswig-Flensburg area also offers different ways to explore actively. Guided nature tours are available in the Schlei Nature Park; the landscape is also criss-crossed by the Viking-Frisian Way, the Ox Road and 15 signposted themed cycling routes. The 25-kilometre SchleiUferTörn is a circular cycling route around the central part of the Schlei and starts in Arnis. Guided nature experiences, signposted trails and a named circular route are all available as different options.
