Rickling combines an outdoor pool with traces of its transport and church history, as well as cycling and hiking routes. This offers a range of travel ideas: a day by the pools, some exercise on a route, or discoveries of local history. When looking for accommodation in Rickling, it helps to consider whether the outdoor pool, activities on the trails, or the village’s history will shape your stay.

Swimming and exercise at the outdoor pool

Rickling outdoor pool has a heated swimming pool, a non-swimmer pool, and a baby pool. The diving tower has boards at heights of one and three metres. There is also a playground on the grounds, as well as areas for football and volleyball. This means swimming, diving, and exercise on land are all available within the pool complex. A kiosk sells food, sweets, and drinks; parking at the outdoor pool is free. This is a practical option for your plans if a visit to an outdoor pool is part of your preferred day’s activities.

Cycling routes, long-distance trail, and landscape

The Rickling cycling tour has a 34-kilometre main route, with optional detours to sights and places of interest. The Mönchsweg runs around Rickling and passes historic fieldstone and brick churches in the surrounding area. Rickling and its district of Fehrenbötel are also on the Naturparkweg, a 118-kilometre long-distance hiking trail that connects the inland nature parks with Holstein Switzerland. The distances refer to different types of routes: a cycling route with optional detours and a long-distance hiking trail that crosses the region.

The NeumĂĽnster Forest lies north of Rickling and is considered suitable for walks. The RothenmĂĽhlenau is a river about twelve kilometres long that flows past Rickling to the south through open fields. The forest, river, and open landscape each offer a distinct setting alongside the marked routes. When planning your trip, you can choose between a cycling tour, a long-distance hiking trail, and shorter walks as different focal points.

Local history, crafts, and railways

Construction of the village church began in 1906; it was consecrated on 17 February 1908. The church underwent extensive renovation for its centenary. It has been a listed building since December 2008. Ricklingerdamm was built in 1818 as a stagecoach station. Theodor Storm is said to have stayed there several times in the 1840s and 1850s. An earth bunker from 1904 beside the railway station was used to store petroleum, which was used to illuminate railway signals and vehicles. Together, these places tell the story of the village and its transport infrastructure.

Another way to learn about a local business is to visit Ricklinger Landbrauerei: it offers professionally guided tours of its brewery museum and regularly hosts brunches, breakfasts, buffets, and barbecues. Check the dates for tours and events in advance if you are planning a visit.
