Discover Kaltenkirchen: history, gardens and activities
Accommodation in Kaltenkirchen
Kaltenkirchen has many different facets: the memorial grove offers a glimpse into the town’s history, the butterfly garden brings nature to life, and the leisure park, storytelling trail, cycling route and HolstenTherme each have their own appeal. When choosing accommodation, it may help to first decide whether you want history, nature or activity to shape your stay.
Memorial sites and early history
The memorial grove was inaugurated in 1923 in memory of Kaltenkirchen residents who fell in the First World War. Plaques list 60 fallen soldiers. In 1953, the site was expanded to commemorate the victims of the Second World War. The earliest records mark two further historical dates: the church associated with Kaltenkirchen was first documented in 1301, and the village itself in 1316. The memorial grove and these two early references offer different ways to explore the town’s history.
Gardens, cycling routes and observing nature
The butterfly garden covers approximately 3,200 square metres on a dry slope. Its diverse selection of flowering plants that attract butterflies provides food, shelter and breeding habitat. Many other insects and small animals can also be found there, including lizards and small birds. The garden brings together different aspects of a habitat in a compact setting: from the plants to the animals that find food and shelter there.
If you would like to explore Kaltenkirchen by bike, you can plan a route of about 22 kilometres around the town. The approximate distance gives you a concrete starting point for planning your route; before setting off, check that the current route suits your plans. Unlike a visit to the garden, this option focuses on travelling a longer distance.
Leisure parks throughout the seasons
The lawns in the leisure park offer space for picnics, sunbathing and play. There are also barbecue areas in summer. The grounds are suitable for running and walking, and a calisthenics area has been available since 2020. In winter, the hills are used for sledging. The focus therefore changes with the seasons: in summer, the lawns are ideal for spending time outdoors, while in winter, the hills are used for sledging.
The Flottmoorpark offers something different: created in 2021, its storytelling trail features permanently installed reading stands and interchangeable frames. The trail combines a park visit with reading and storytelling. Kaltenkirchen offers several ways to spend time outdoors, from exercise and play to a walk along the storytelling trail.
Swimming and timetable information
The WasserWelt at HolstenTherme offers a tropical-style swimming experience, with both the water and air at 32 °C. There are also five 25-metre swimming lanes at 28 °C and a 33 °C area where you can float. In summer, the adjoining outdoor pool is also open. The different water temperatures and areas give the swimming facilities several distinct features; when planning your visit, you can consider whether you would rather swim laps or enjoy the warmer water.
Kaltenkirchen provides up-to-date timetable information for local buses and the wider HVV network. If bus connections are important for your arrival or getting around, check the timetables for your travel date.
Beyond the town: Segeberg
The wider Segeberg destination offers further nature and cultural attractions. Segeberg Forest covers 40 square kilometres and provides a wooded setting for nature-focused excursions. The hiking trails and paths in the district range from longer hikes to short walks; guided hikes and nature tours offer insights into local wildlife and plant life. These district-wide options form a separate part of the Segeberg destination and should be distinguished from what Kaltenkirchen itself has to offer.
Cultural history and events add further dimensions to the wider Segeberg destination. The Alt-Segeberger Bürgerhaus Museum covers the building’s history and its residents since 1541, as well as Segeberg’s 800-year development. Every summer, the Karl May Festival takes place in the open-air theatre at the foot of Bad Segeberg’s Kalkberg hill; each performance can accommodate up to 7,700 spectators. If you plan to attend, it is a good idea to check the relevant event dates. This lets you relate Kaltenkirchen’s memorial sites, nature and leisure activities to other aspects of the wider Segeberg destination without presenting them as a single place or experience.
