Schmölln tells its story through button-making, but also through historic buildings and waterside paths. A visit can therefore take many different forms: from the Button and Regional Museum to the Sprotte Water Adventure Trail and the TATAMI leisure pool. Families will find hands-on activities at the museum and along the adventure trail, while anyone interested in culture can explore the city’s local industrial history and buildings.

Button-making history at the museum and throughout the city

The Schmölln Button and Regional Museum brings the eventful history of the local button industry to life. Button production from tagua nuts played a special role. Raw materials, tools and historic machines illustrate the manufacturing process and give the industrial history a tangible dimension. The museum offers an audio guide for families and children, and its workshops are aimed at children and young people. Guided tours of the permanent exhibition are available by appointment. Check which activities are available on your chosen date before your trip.

Button-making history is also part of the cityscape: the Schmölln Button Trail once passed around 18 smaller and larger button factories. The market square offers a different perspective; it is one of the largest market squares in Central Germany. St. Nikolai’s Church was built in the 15th century. Together, these places reveal different sides of Schmölln, from its industrial heritage to its historic town center.

Water and activity

The Sprotte Water Adventure Trail runs alongside the Sprotte between Posterstein and Schmölln and is nine kilometers long. Twelve interactive stations and activities are spread along the route from Posterstein Castle to Schmölln. They include a playground with a mill theme, bridges and fords, a willow village and a Kneipp trail. The path has only gentle inclines and is especially suitable for families. The stations turn the route into an exploration trail where exercise and playful experiences go hand in hand.

Cyclists can also choose from several routes. A cycling tour around Schmölln, especially recommended for families, starts in the city center and is about 35 kilometers long. The Thuringian Cities Chain cycling route also passes through Schmölln. The town is also a stop on the roughly 65-kilometer cycling tour through the Altenburger Obstland fruit-growing region. These figures offer an initial comparison of route lengths: alongside the nine-kilometer Water Adventure Trail, there are cycling routes of about 35 and 65 kilometers. Check the current route details when planning your trip.

If you would rather focus on swimming or a sauna visit than a tour, the TATAMI leisure pool is another option. The water area covers 400 m², and the swimming pool is 25 meters long. Facilities also include a Japanese-style sauna complex with several themed saunas and a steam room.

Tower, mill and village museum

The Ernst-Agnes Tower stands above Schmölln on the highest point of Pfefferberg. The 30-meter-high iron observation tower is a striking landmark in the landscape above the town.

Schmölln’s districts have more places of historical interest. Lumpzig post mill was built in 1732. It is the last surviving post mill in the Altenburger Land and one of the two oldest post mills in Thuringia. The mill also hosts several events throughout the year, including the Lumpzig Post Mill Festival. In the district of Altkirchen, the village museum displays its collection across five exhibition rooms: more than 2,000 exhibits are housed in about 300 m² of exhibition space.

Schmölln and the Altenburger Land

The wider Altenburger Land travel region is characterized by gentle hills, extensive forests and idyllic bathing lakes. This adds a regional perspective to Schmölln’s local attractions without conflating them with the town’s history and experiences.

If you are considering Schmölln as a place to stay, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your visit: button-making history and the town center, water and saunas, one of the cycling tours, or the additional attractions in the surrounding districts. This makes it easier to search for accommodation based on the experiences that matter to your trip, without combining the different routes and places into a single excursion.
