Vollmershain between Valley and Village History
Accommodation in Vollmershain
Vollmershain lies in a valley through which the Mannichswalder Sprotte flows. Meadows stretch along both sides of the stream; wooded slate cliffs alternate with gentle valley slopes. Open spaces and wooded hillsides thus lie side by side. If you would like the landscape to be the focus of your stay, you will find a clear interplay of valley, meadows and cliffs here.
Walking and Other Activities
Three walking routes pass through Vollmershain, including the Bauerngartenroute. The routes are signposted at intersections; as conditions can change, check the current situation before setting out. Vollmershain also has an 18-hole mini-golf course with holes of varying difficulty. If you would like to include it in your plans, check in advance whether the course is currently open.
The walking routes and mini-golf course offer different ways to spend your time: one focuses on walking through the village, while the other offers a course with holes of varying difficulty. This gives you two specific options to consider when planning your day, without prescribing a particular itinerary.
Four-Sided Farmsteads, Church and Village History
Of the 25 four-sided farmsteads once found in Vollmershain, 15 have been almost completely preserved. They give the village a distinctive architectural character. The church can also be appreciated through its different features: the church tower of Vollmershain Church has a Romanesque core with an apse added on the east side, while the nave is Late Gothic.
The painter Anton Hahn is part of the local art history: he and his family created, among other things, paintings of buildings in Vollmershain. The village’s history thus brings together built heritage and its depiction in paintings. If you are looking for accommodation in Vollmershain, you can consider whether walking routes and landscapes, or architectural and village history, should play a greater role in your stay.
The wider Altenburger Land destination
In the wider Altenburger Land destination, gentle hilly landscapes, extensive forests and idyllically situated bathing lakes shape the scenery. The region’s routes also offer a variety of experiences: the Neuseen-Challenge long-distance hiking trail passes through Altenburger Land and is marked by a bright neon-yellow shoe as a waymarker. The Pleiße Cycle Route also passes through Altenburger Land; the Luther Trail runs through the area and can be followed as a pilgrimage route. The Kohlebahn offers another perspective as a traditional narrow-gauge railway with a track gauge of 900 mm: its 15-kilometre route runs from the outskirts of Meuselwitz through the Schnaudertal valley.
The wider Altenburger Land destination offers a range of architectural and museum attractions. The Rote Spitzen are the surviving Romanesque towers of a former Augustinian Canons’ monastery and are recognised as a cultural monument of national importance. Altenburg Residential Palace stands on a porphyry rock and houses the Palace and Playing Card Museum. The Playing Card Museum is one of the oldest and most extensive museums of its kind in Europe.
Burg Posterstein Museum presents exhibitions on the region’s cultural history. A visit includes the castle dungeon and climbing the 25-metre-high keep; check whether this experience is currently available before your trip. The Mauritianum Natural History Museum displays a historic bird collection, fossils from lignite mines and an interactive area devoted to local flora and fauna. This means that Altenburger Land offers museums focused on both cultural and natural history.
Other regional highlights include the Brüderkirche, the Altenburg Botanical Experience Garden and the Schmecktouren in Altenburg. Since 2014, the Brüderkirche has served as a pilgrimage and information centre for the Luther Trail and the old imperial road “Via Imperii.” The Altenburg Botanical Experience Garden offers a place to relax and unwind. The Schmecktouren combine a guided city tour with regional food and stories about the people and traditions of the region. Check dates and applicable booking requirements before making plans.
