Gentle hills, extensive forests and idyllically situated bathing lakes shape the Altenburger Land. They are joined by Romanesque towers, a residential palace, museums with remarkable collections and trails for a range of interests. When choosing accommodation, it helps to first decide what matters most to you: Are you mainly interested in culture, do you have particular places in mind, or are you more drawn to hiking and cycling trails? This lets you tailor your search to the experiences that matter to you on your trip.

Cultural attractions with distinctive collections

The Red Spires are the surviving Romanesque towers of a former Augustinian Canons' monastery and are recognised as a nationally significant cultural monument. They stand as a striking architectural testament to the history of the place. Altenburg Residential Palace offers a different perspective on cultural history: it stands on a porphyry rock and houses the Palace and Playing Card Museum. The Playing Card Museum is one of the oldest and most extensive museums of its kind in Europe.

The Lindenau Museum centres on 180 precious panels of early Italian painting from the 13th to the 16th century. The Mauritianum Natural History Museum displays a historic bird collection, fossils from open-cast lignite mines and an interactive area devoted to local flora and fauna. Art, natural history and regional connections each offer a different focus, giving culture lovers a choice of several distinctive subjects.

The Brüderkirche also links history with pilgrimage routes: since 2014, it has served as a pilgrimage and information centre for the Luther Trail and the old Via Imperii imperial road. The Museum Burg Posterstein explores the cultural history of the region. A visit includes the castle dungeon and a climb to the top of the 25-metre keep. Check before your trip whether this offering is available for your visit.

On foot, by bike and on rails

Those who want to spend time outdoors will find a range of themes and ways to get around. The modern Neuseen-Challenge long-distance hiking trail runs through the Altenburger Land; its marker is a bright neon-yellow shoe. The Luther Trail also passes through the Altenburger Land and can be walked as a pilgrimage route. The Pleiße Cycle Route adds a cycling option, also running through the Altenburger Land. The trails have different focuses, so you do not need to limit your trip planning to a single activity.

The Coal Railway offers a different perspective: it is a traditional 900 mm narrow-gauge railway. Its 15-kilometre route runs from the outskirts of Meuselwitz through the Schnaudertal valley. So alongside hiking and cycling trails, there is also a railway line and its distinctive regional setting to explore. For quieter moments, Altenburg Botanical Experience Garden offers space for rest and relaxation. The gentle rolling hills, forests and bathing lakes provide the surrounding landscape.

Regional stories and flavours

The Schmecktouren (Tasting Tours) in Altenburg combine a city tour with regional flavours and stories about the people and traditions of the area. They add a culinary perspective to sightseeing. Dates and booking conditions can change, so check what is currently available in advance. Together with the museums and the various trails, they show how the Altenburger Land offers different ways to balance culture, activity and regional themes on a trip.

When looking for accommodation, consider which experiences you want to shape your trip: the collections and cultural attractions, a particular route, the Coal Railway or the Schmecktouren. Mark the places and activities that matter to you before making your selection.
