Reichmannsdorf is located on the plateau of the Saalfelder Höhe. The village’s themes range from occupations, mining and local history to nature and seasonal activities. The Rotschnabelnest brings several of these themes together under one roof; churches, an archaeological site and the History Park add further historical points of interest.

The Rotschnabelnest: Occupations, Gold and Nature

The Rotschnabelnest building served as Reichmannsdorf’s school until 1976 and later as a school camp. In October 2000, it was dedicated to its use as a museum. The building’s former use and its current museum themes are both central to the site.

The crafts room presents numerous occupations, including some that no longer exist today. The display cases invite visitors to identify and guess the activities shown. This makes the world of work a tangible subject to explore for children and adults alike. You can also discover fairy tales, gold mining, local history and nature at the Rotschnabelnest.

Coins, rocks, minerals and mining are also among the museum’s themes; the Rotschnabelnest also has a ducat press. The focus therefore extends beyond occupations to include various aspects of local and material history. The museum covers two floors. Behind the building is a large outdoor area, which includes Rotschnabel Park. Large information boards there explore the region’s animal and plant life.

Churches and traces of history

Aquila Church stands in the centre of Reichmannsdorf and dates back to the 17th century. Another historical trace is the former St. Brandis Church, once used as a pilgrimage church. Among the sights is the archaeological site of the pilgrimage chapel of “St. Brandis”: the foundations of the former church were discovered and excavated in 1924. They were restored from 2001 to 2002 and designated an archaeological site.

Two memorials in Reichmannsdorf History Park commemorate wartime: one is dedicated to the Franco-Prussian War and the other to the First World War. The ThĂĽringen Quiz XXL, located in the church car park, offers another way to explore local history. Together with Aquila Church and the traces of St. Brandis, these sites bring different historical themes side by side: religious buildings, an archaeological site and remembrance of war.

Activities and getting around

Hiking, sledding and skiing are activities to enjoy in Reichmannsdorf in both summer and winter. A specific sledding hill is located right by the sports ground and is 140 metres long. For mountain biking, the “Mountainbike Albrecht-Routen 06” route passes through Reichmannsdorf; it is not marked with signposts. Keep this in mind when planning your route.

According to the provider, the nearest public transport stop is 700 metres from the sledding hill at the sports ground. Check the current timetable before travelling.

Festivals organised by local clubs also offer a glimpse into cultural life. These include a Christmas market, a Christmas tree burning, May Day celebrations, a marksmen’s festival and a fair. The events mentioned range from seasonal celebrations to the fair.
