Bischofroda: Castle, Village Church and Hainich Forest
Accommodation in Bischofroda
Bischofroda lies in the Lauter Valley on the slopes of the Hainich Forest. Old half-timbered houses and larger farmsteads shape the village; Bischofroda Castle was completed in 1752 in the village centre. There is also the Romanesque-style village church and the Hainichland Trail, which passes through Bischofroda.
Castle and village church: historical details
The stone carving above the castle portal dates from the 18th century. It depicts an episcopal coat of arms. The church also has distinctive architectural features: its oldest parts are of the type found in an Old Thuringian village church from the Romanesque period. As a remnant of a Romanesque original church, it retains a solid tower with narrow light slits and an apse built into its eastern side.
The church nave has two galleries and a lord’s box bearing the coat of arms of the sovereign. The church is probably one of the oldest in Thuringia. Different historical features therefore meet in the village centre: the castle, completed in 1752, and a church with Romanesque-style elements. The wedding room in the castle is romantically decorated in the Rococo style and intended for civil wedding ceremonies. If you are planning a ceremony, it is best to confirm availability in advance.
Village character and location on the Hainich Forest
The streets and lanes winding through Bischofroda are paved with natural stone. Together with the half-timbered houses and larger farmsteads, they give the village a character distinct from the architectural details of the castle and church. Its location on the slopes of the Hainich Forest in the Lauter Valley adds a connection to the surrounding landscape. When exploring the destination, you can focus on different aspects: local buildings, the village’s established character or the trail through Bischofroda.
The Hainichland Trail through Bischofroda
Stage 6 of the Hainichland Trail runs from Mihla to Hütscheroda via Bischofroda. It is 17.7 kilometres long, rated moderate, and listed as taking about 4 hours and 50 minutes. The route has 421 metres of ascent and 293 metres of descent. These figures describe the entire stage, not just the section through Bischofroda; route details may change if the trail is adjusted.
On this stage, Bischofroda lies 7.2 kilometres along the route, between Ebental and Berka vor dem Hainich. From the village entrance, the Hainichland Trail follows a pavement to the village centre and the castle. The route thus links the hiking stage with a specific stretch through the village. In Hütscheroda, the Hainichland Trail passes several attractions, including the viewing tower at Generalsblick, the Wildcat Village with its wildcat enclosure, and the Wildcat Trail. These destinations are in Hütscheroda, not Bischofroda.
