Treffurt combines a half-timbered old town with castle and church history, as well as hiking trails offering views of the Werra Valley. This makes the town an appealing destination for a trip where you can choose between exploring historic sites and spending time outdoors. In the old town and the historic centres of the town’s districts, you’ll encounter half-timbered houses; along the hiking trails, the scenery is shaped by viewpoints, hilltops and special discoveries along the way.

Half-Timbered Houses and History in Treffurt

The Lords of Treffurt transformed the original keep and ring wall of Normannstein Castle into a prestigious complex. After the era of the knights, the Ganerben (joint heirs) resided there until the 16th century and administered the town of Treffurt from the castle. After 1894, the chapel building and gatehouse took on their present appearance. The complex thus tells not only of its architecture, but also of its role in the town’s history.

Different periods can also be discovered in the townscape: Treffurt Town Hall, with its large tower, was built in the 16th century. It underwent extensive renovation in 1990, when the half-timbering was exposed. St Boniface’s Church dates back to the 13th century; one of its notable features is a Gothic winged altarpiece. Together with the half-timbered houses in the old town and the historic centres of the town’s districts, these buildings offer several starting points for a cultural history tour.

Local History Museum and Discoveries for Children

The Treffurt Local History Museum spans four floors. It showcases crafts, geological finds, the Ganerbschaft (joint inheritance) and the division of the town into three parts. Other key themes include traditional Werra pottery, regional geology and local cigar production. The range of topics thus extends from everyday life and craft history to the region’s geological features.

For children, the museum offers a treasure hunt with Rosalie the museum mouse. They can also experience what learning was like in the past by sitting at an old school desk. Visits to the local history museum can be arranged on request through the tourist information office; please confirm your visit in advance. This lets you plan your museum visit specifically as part of your trip, rather than assuming that regular opening hours apply.

Normannstein Castle has been extensively renovated and features the “Werraburgen über Werrafurten” exhibition, castle dining and two wedding rooms in a historic setting. Important for your plans: the exhibition and castle dining are currently closed. The historic castle areas and the town museum offer different insights, but the facilities mentioned at the castle are currently unavailable.

Hiking Trails, Views and Nature

The Lindenhecke rest area on the Normannstein TOP hiking trail offers 360-degree panoramic views; sun loungers invite you to linger. The rest of the TOP hiking trail has other discoveries in store: look out for botanical highlights such as orchids and artworks along the Ars Natura Trail. When planning your hike, you can enjoy the trail’s different features: views, nature watching and art. The condition of facilities such as the sun loungers may change.

The Leine-Werra Nature Park Trail offers a different landscape: it leaves Treffurt via the 362-metre-high SĂĽlzenberg, which offers repeated views of the Werra Valley. The summit of Adolfsburg is also a popular hiking destination with a viewpoint. The mountain is 378 metres high and consists of shell limestone. These destinations offer different highlights: the SĂĽlzenberg is part of the route described from Treffurt, while Adolfsburg stands out as a hiking destination in its own right, with views from the summit.
