Accommodation in Moorgrund
Moorgrund is particularly interesting for travelers who want to experience history in specific places: Möhra has several connections to Martin Luther, while Waldfisch, Etterwinden and Gumpelstadt offer other cultural and natural attractions. When looking for accommodation in Moorgrund, it helps to first decide what interests you most: historical sites, landscapes or trails.
Möhra: Luther history and architecture
The exhibition “Martin Luther and Möhra” introduces Möhra as the reformer's ancestral home. It provides information about Martin Luther's stay in Möhra on May 3 and 4, 1521, and his subsequent “capture” near Steinbach. The exhibition is located in the Möhra community center, Türkstraße 1, 36433 Moorgrund. Visits can be arranged by calling 03695-84535; confirm your appointment by phone before you travel.
Other sites in Möhra also highlight different aspects of its history. The Luther ancestral home recalls part of Martin Luther's life story. The small chapel on Kirchberg was expanded in the 16th century and later developed into today's Luther Church. Möhra also has some particularly beautiful half-timbered houses to visit. Alongside the connections to Luther, church history and half-timbered architecture therefore offer distinct themes for your stay.
Historic buildings and townscapes
In Waldfisch, Forsthaus Kissel was completed in 1871 and used as a hunting lodge by Duke Georg II of Meiningen. It is considered a popular excursion destination. The Wackenhof near Kupfersuhl offers a different perspective on architectural history: a farm there was faithfully restored, and its owners received the Thuringian Monument Prize in 2009. The former ducal hunting lodge and the award-winning restoration of a farm illustrate two different aspects of the built heritage.
St. Andrew's Church is also one of the attractions in Witzelroda. Together with the Luther ancestral home, Luther Church and half-timbered houses in Möhra, it offers a choice of historical and architectural themes rather than a single focus for your visit.
Landscapes, trails and summer recreation
Near Waldfisch, the Wacholderheide juniper heath is designated as a nature reserve. It comprises a calcareous grassland complex on Zechstein. This makes a specific natural attraction part of the Moorgrund experience alongside its historic buildings.
Several trails run near Etterwinden in different directions: the Thuringian Rennsteig lies east of the village, and the Sallmannshäuser Rennsteig lies to the south. The Lullus Path runs through the Etterwinden district. The Luther Trail leads from Möhra to the Wartburg in Eisenach; it also passes through the Gumpelstadt district. When planning, you can distinguish between these different locations and routes without combining them into a single trail.
For a summer break, the Gumpelstadt outdoor swimming pool offers a place to relax during the summer months.
Bad Salzungen: lake and museum
Bad Salzungen has its own attractions, which you can consider separately from the places in Moorgrund. Burgsee lake lies directly beside the historic old town; remains of the former Schnepfenburg castle are preserved by the lake. The lakeside promenade is a pleasant place for a stroll. In good weather, the boat rental offers trips on Burgsee; check the conditions locally.
The Museum at the Gradierwerk has a permanent exhibition about salt and its production, and also shows how spa culture has changed over time. A small salt-boiling house in the museum garden is used for live salt-boiling demonstrations. Bad Salzungen thus adds salt production and spa culture to the region's historical and cultural attractions, while Burgsee offers a separate destination for a walk or, in good weather, a boat trip.
