Wutha-Farnroda: Hörsel Mountains, Mills and Local History
Accommodation in Wutha-Farnroda
Wutha-Farnroda is a destination for travellers who don’t want to divide nature and history between separate days of their holiday. Fossils, historic mills and a former railway line tell different stories of the region; a castle park, an outdoor swimming pool and hiking views add to the options.
Hörsel Mountains, Fossils and Crafts
The Hörselberg Museum is in Schönau, a district of Wutha-Farnroda, right at the foot of the Hörsel Mountains. It is housed in a listed complex of buildings comprising a church, an old schoolhouse, a rectory with a parsonage, a stable, a barn, a washhouse and a bakehouse. The exhibition offers different perspectives on nature and everyday life: unique fossil finds reveal information about the geology and formation of the Hörsel Mountains. Another exhibition is dedicated to the region’s baking tradition. Old baking machines, a variety of kitchen utensils and a “baker’s shop just like in Grandma’s day” bring the history of baking to life. Fossils and historic tools offer tangible starting points for conversations about the formation of the landscape or everyday activities in the past as you explore together.
Railways, Mills and Historic Buildings
The “Rühler Bimmel” open-air exhibition in Wutha documents the former route of the Ruhla Railway, with its stations, stops and industrial sidings. It includes an original section of track that survived the dismantling work after the railway line was closed. This brings together the documented route and a surviving piece of track: one gives an insight into the former network, while the other makes one of its components tangible.
The Hörsel Mill offers a different glimpse into local history: the old sawmill sits right on the Hörsel in Schönau and is the only one of the village’s three mills that still operates. The Hellwig memorial commemorates Lieutenant Friedrich Hellwig, who freed around 4,000 Prussian prisoners of war at Eichrodt on 17 October 1806. The Laurentius Church in Farnroda also features a remarkable historic detail: its well-preserved bell tower stands separately, a feature unique in Germany. The church itself was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century.
Castle Park, the Rennsteig and Time Outdoors
The tower of a former 12th-century moated castle stands in Farnroda Castle Park. With its pond and adjacent festival grounds, the park offers a place to relax and hold events in the heart of the village. Two distinct features meet here: a surviving remnant of the former castle complex and an open park that also invites visitors to spend time by the water.
The Hörsel Mountains near Wutha-Farnroda form a distinctive, elongated ridge of shell limestone, riddled with caves. They include the Kleiner Hörselberg at 426 m above sea level, the Mittelberg and the Großer Hörselberg at 484 m above sea level. The “Beautiful Unknowns” circular hiking trail on the Rennsteig offers views of the Hörsel Mountains, the Inselsberg, the Drachenstein and the Wartburg. The municipality of Wutha-Farnroda borders the Rennsteig in its Mosbach district; Mosbach Forest Pool adds a modern outdoor swimming pool with stainless-steel basins and solar-heated pool water to the options. If you’re planning a visit to the pool, check the current seasonal opening times in advance.
