Reinhardshagen â River History and Art
Accommodation in Reinhardshagen
Reinhardshagen combines its connection to the river with industrial history, art and medieval church paintings. In Veckerhagen, you can discover a former ironworks, a fountain with its own artistic concept and a statue of Brama. Riverside paths and the Weser add to these cultural highlights. You can shape your stay around the discoveries that interest you most.
Industrial History, Art and Legend
The ironworks in Veckerhagen is now an industrial monument and was once a landgraveâs ironworks. In 1699, Denis Papin had the worldâs first steam boiler cast there. This marked his first practical step towards the piston steam engine. The site thus brings together a tangible industrial monument and an important chapter in the early history of technology.
The Fountain of Life in Veckerhagen tells a different story: it depicts the cycle of life, from its beginning in the egg cell through protective and turbulent phases to its end. There, the water flows back into the starry circle of the universe. The Brama statue also stands at the landing stage in Veckerhagen; it was a gift to the municipality of Reinhardshagen from the district of Kassel.
Vaake, too, offers a distinct perspective on the areaâs history. The village church on the banks of the Weser was built in connection with Vaakeâs ties to the Imperial Abbey of Hilwartshausen; its wall and ceiling paintings date from around 1400. A legend takes you further back, into a mythical past: Brama is said to have been a daughter of the Reinhardswald giant Kruko. The legend also tells of a castle whose ruins can still be seen in the Bramwald, opposite Reinhardshagen.
Routes and the River as Points of Reference
Reinhardshagen is right on the Fulda Cycle Route R1 and the Weser Uplands hiking trail, and on the Weser, where there are boat landings. These routes and the riverside location offer various ways to plan a stay, whether you are mainly interested in cycling, hiking or the cultural history of the individual districts.
The Gierseil ferry is another way to navigate the river; it serves as a bridge substitute between Veckerhagen in Hesse and Hemeln in Lower Saxony, a district of Hann. MĂŒnden. It is considered an important transport link between North Hesse and South Lower Saxony. If you plan to use the ferry on your journey, check the timetable in advance.
