Reichelsheim (Odenwald): Hiking between castle and history
Accommodation in Reichelsheim
Reichenberg Castle stands prominently on a ridge and defines the view of Reichelsheim. This widely recognizable structure gives the town a distinctive landscape. The area also offers trails featuring local legends, distant views and traces of its former mining industry. When planning your stay, you can choose from a range of hiking themes and a visit to the regional museum.
Three trails with different highlights
The 12.1 km circular “Wildweibchenstein Legends Trail” passes Reichenberg Castle, the ruins of Rodenstein Castle, the Falling Stream and the Wildweibchenstein rock. The route crosses the Buchwald forest and returns to the car park at Reichenberg School. It thus connects several named landmarks with a section through the forest.
The 15.4 km Gersprenz Valley Loop R7 offers distant views as far as Neunkirchner Höhe, at 604 m. It follows part of the Alemannenweg trail and returns to Reichelsheim via Beerfurth. This combines views reaching a specific elevation with a route that partly follows another named trail.
The 14.7 km Panorama Trail Between Ore and Stone R8 passes through the former mining region around Rohrbach and Erzbach and offers a glimpse inside an old mine tunnel. Unlike the other two trails, it focuses on the area’s mining history.
The distances can also help you choose: the Legends Trail is shorter than the other two, and R8 is 0.7 km shorter than R7. You can weigh the distance against the theme of each route. Check local route information before setting out.
Museum and practical information
The Reichelsheim Odenwald Regional Museum is open on the second Sunday of each month from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Check the opening hours before your visit.
The Reichelsheim municipal tourist information office has developed a separate flyer for each of the Odenwaldklub-certified quality circular hiking trails R1, R6, R7 and R8. Contact the tourist information office in advance to ask whether the flyers are available.
More places to explore in the wider Odenwald destination
Other places in the wider Odenwald destination offer their own cultural and natural highlights. Breuberg Castle has a history dating back more than 850 years and is one of the largest and best-preserved castles in southern Germany. The castle houses the Breuberg Museum. An adventure trail leads uphill from the historic market square in Neustadt to the castle; its features include viewing platforms and a large slide.
The Odenwald’s geology also tells a long story. The crystalline Odenwald contains intrusive rocks such as gabbro, diorite, granodiorite and granite, as well as metamorphic rocks. The metamorphic rocks provide evidence of a continent-continent collision 400 to 320 million years ago. Geological processes at the Felsenmeer in Lautertal began more than 340 million years ago. Relics of Roman stoneworking from the 3rd and 4th centuries also give the Felsenmeer historical significance.
The Felsenmeer Information Centre explains how the Felsenmeer formed, Roman stoneworking, the Siegfried Spring and the Bergstraße-Odenwald Nature Park. Tours and talks on geological development, stoneworking, legends, wildlife and the Felsberg habitat can be booked through the centre. Check in advance whether these activities are available. The information centre also has a bistro serving regional dishes.
