Discover Wölfersheim: Lake, Tower and Trails
Accommodation in Wölfersheim
Wölfersheim offers several distinct ways to experience its landscape and history. Wölfersheim Lake links its origins in lignite mining with a historical circular trail, while trails of varying lengths offer different ways to get active. In the district of Wölfersheim, the White Tower defines the townscape, complemented by the Baroque architecture of the Protestant Reformed Church. The Singberg Discovery Trail adds a family-friendly circular route combining exercise, activities and nature themes.
Lake, Circular Trails and Outdoor Activities
At 37 hectares, Wölfersheim Lake is the largest lake in the Wetterau lake district. It was created by mining: lignite was extracted here in the first half of the last century. Information boards along the Historical Circular Trail at Wölfersheim Lake explain how the lake was formed, as well as the site’s mining and power station history. QR codes provide additional content, including an audio guide and video footage.
The Historical Circular Trail is largely accessible, but there is currently no accessible toilet there. These two details help you take the trail’s accessibility and the available toilet facilities into account separately when planning your visit.
The trails around the lake are suitable for running. Options include a circular route of about 3.5 kilometers and variants of 5, 10 and 20 kilometers. This gives you a choice of distances, from a shorter loop to longer running routes. The Red Lama Football Golf Resort by the lake also welcomes individuals and groups for football golf, fun and team building, by prior arrangement. If you plan this activity, be sure to arrange your visit in advance.
A Family Trail and Two Long-Distance Routes
The Singberg Discovery Trail is a family-friendly circular route of about 3.5 kilometers. It passes through orchards, a small forest and a gorge. Interactive stations with tasks and obstacles alternate with information about animals and plants. This sets the trail apart from the running routes by the lake: here, the stations and nature themes guide you through the landscape.
Two named routes also offer orientation: the Luther Trail 1521 between Worms and Wartburg Castle runs from Hungen via Wölfersheim to Friedberg. The Limes Cycle Route follows the Limes past Wölfersheim. The descriptions distinguish between a route that goes through Wölfersheim and a cycling route that passes by it.
Tower, Church and Energy History
The White Tower is the landmark of the district of Wölfersheim. This 27-meter-high round tower, with its stone spire and battlement, was the largest structure in the town’s fortifications, completed with the tower in 1408. Its height, design and function make the tower a particularly tangible link to the town’s history.
Wölfersheim’s Protestant Reformed Church is one of Germany’s largest Baroque hall churches. The Wölfersheim Energy Museum adds another historical focus, linking the historic use of lignite for energy with renewable energy. Wölfersheim thus highlights both a structure from the history of its town fortifications and its energy history, while the church adds Baroque architecture to these themes.
The Wetterau Region
The wider Wetterau destination offers another perspective on nature and cycling routes. The nature reserves in the Wetterau district are accessible to visitors via information boards, observation points, hiking trails and cycle paths. Bingenheimer Ried is one of the key areas of the “Auenverbund Wetterau” landscape conservation area. A network of regional and long-distance cycle routes runs throughout the Wetterau, with many of the routes connected to one another.
Numerous train stations and stops in the Wetterau district make it possible to reach the cycling routes by public transport. For specific timetables, check the latest connections. Cultural attractions also shape the wider destination: the Wetterau Museum presents local and regional history from the Stone Age to the early Middle Ages, as well as the history of the Celts and Romans. It is also a regional Limes information center for the central Wetterau.
The region’s guided-tour program includes discovery tours with night-watchman walks through old lanes and themed tours of local attractions. Towns and municipalities across the Wetterau offer a range of themed tours; dates vary for individual tours.
