Discover Tespe: Elbe Cycle Route, outdoor pool and Low German hall house
Accommodation in Tespe
Tespe is a destination for days when cycling along the Elbe dike, swimming and local history are all of interest. The Elbe Cycle Route runs on or alongside the dike through Tespe and the Elbmarsch towards Rönne; there is also the outdoor pool, Tespe Harbour and a Low German hall house dating from 1779. You can use these interests to guide your choice.
Cycling along the Elbe dike
The Elbe Cycle Route runs through Tespe directly on or alongside the Elbe dike and continues through the Elbmarsch towards Rönne. On the opposite side of the Elbe, it passes the Krümmel nuclear power plant. Tespe’s dike viewpoint can be reached via the cycle route, and the outdoor pool is also a short detour from the route. This makes it possible to plan a cycle tour and a visit to the pool as separate parts of a day.
From Lüneburg, you can reach the outdoor pool on bus route 5405 to the Tespe, Schule stop. Check the route information before travelling.
Swimming and relaxing at the outdoor pool
Tespe’s outdoor pool has a 25-metre pool and a sunbathing lawn for relaxing. A large red water slide with its own pool has been part of the facility since 1984. The pool regularly offers swimming lessons for beginners and advanced swimmers. This brings together different aspects of swimming: swimming laps, spending time on the sunbathing lawn and enjoying the slide with its own pool.
A Low German hall house and Tespe’s settlement history
The Low German hall house in Tespe dates from 1779 and preserves an unchanged nine-bay two-post frame. Its architectural interest lies not only in the age of the house, but also in its preserved construction. For anyone who enjoys discovering places through their architecture, this detail offers a distinct way to explore Tespe’s history.
The settlement history takes us to a different period: the original village stood on the Geest on the northern bank of the Elbe. Tesperhude developed at the site of the former village. The preserved hall house and the village’s historical development therefore represent different aspects of local history.
Harbour and finding accommodation
Tespe Harbour has 60 berths. Available guest berths are marked in green. For boaters, this marking provides practical guidance when planning their stay at the harbour.
The type of accommodation you are looking for can be guided by your plans for the day: cycling on the Elbe Cycle Route, swimming at the outdoor pool, or exploring architectural and settlement history each offer a different focus. If you would like to combine cycling and swimming, you can plan the pool as a short detour from the route. This way, you can start looking for a place to stay by considering the experiences that matter to you.
Harburg as a wider setting
The wider Harburg destination has a cycle route network extending across Harburg district, including 1,000 kilometres of signposted tourist cycle routes. The district encompasses varied landscapes such as the Elbmarsch, the Harburg Hills, the Nordheide and, above all, the Lüneburg Heath. These details describe the broader regional setting alongside the specific experiences in Tespe.
One hiking option in the wider Harburg destination is the Heidschnuckenweg. Opened in 2012, the trail runs for 223 kilometres from Hamburg through Harburg, Heidekreis and Celle districts and across more than 30 large and small heathland areas in the northern and southern heath. It is divided into 13 stages and complemented by twelve Heideschleifen (heathland circular trails), ranging in length from 1.4 to 20.9 kilometres. The different trail lengths give hikers a range of planning options; the Heidschnuckenweg offers a different kind of journey from the Elbe Cycle Route in Tespe.
