Vorwerk combines a distinctive village centre with signposted routes and a nearby moorland trail—a blend of village history and nature experiences. The municipality is part of the Tarmstedt collective municipality in the district of Rotenburg (Wümme) and comprises the villages of Vorwerk, Buchholz and Dipshorn. The Teufelsmoor lies within the municipality, southwest of Buchholz. During your stay, you can therefore choose between exploring the village centre, following routes in Vorwerk and taking a trip to the nearby Tarmstedter Moor.

Erratic Boulder, Bell Tower and Half-Timbered Houses

A large erratic boulder shapes the village centre, with the bell tower standing beside it. Old oaks and traditional half-timbered houses are also among the features of the village centre. The boulder is made of granite and was transported here from southern Sweden by glacial ice. It was moved to its central location in 1988; the bell tower was rebuilt in 1976. The two dates mark different chapters: 1976 refers to the tower, and 1988 to the relocation of the boulder. Those interested in village history will find not only historic buildings here, but also the story of the stone’s geological origins.

Routes in Vorwerk

Signposted cycling and walking routes with benches offer a way to explore Vorwerk actively. The adjacent forest, Der Linnewedel, also has paths for walking and cycling. When spending time outdoors, you can choose between the signposted routes and the woodland; the benches provide places to rest along the way. The well-kept residential areas have their own appeal, too: old farmhouses and tall trees offer visitors opportunities to relax and enjoy their leisure time. This makes exercise and breaks two different aspects of a stay.

The Nearby Tarmstedter Moor Trail

The nearby Tarmstedter Moor, a western extension of the Teufelsmoor located near Tarmstedt, offers another perspective on nature and culture. The nearby Tarmstedter Moor trail loops around a small moor lake and introduces visitors to the moor’s flora and fauna. It also explains how peat was once harvested and the work carried out by the early settlers of the moor. Benches and tables by the small lake provide places to rest. The Tarmstedter Moor trail is accessible year-round; nevertheless, check access information again before your visit. Nature observation and the history of moorland use go hand in hand along the trail. A visit to the Tarmstedter Moor can also be combined with a cycle ride or a circular walk on the NORDPFAD Tarmstedter Moor.

Harvest Festival, Transport and Choosing Accommodation

Vorwerk’s annual calendar includes the Harvest Festival, traditionally held on the first weekend in October. Exact dates may vary, so check the date for the relevant year before your trip. In the Tarmstedt collective municipality, ASTROW is a call-ahead shared taxi intended to bridge the gap between residential areas and the main public transport routes. Service details may change, so check them before you travel. When looking for accommodation in Vorwerk, it helps to decide in advance: will your stay focus mainly on the village centre and routes within the municipality, or would you also like to include the nearby moorland trail and circular walk? This helps you tailor your search to your preferred mix of village history, activity and moorland scenery.
