Dettum offers three distinct highlights for your stay: the post mill, the seasonal outdoor swimming pool and the culture house.

Mill history in the townscape

The post mill is Dettum’s landmark. Built in 1863, it is considered an industrial monument. It lends the village a distinct historical character: its year of construction and status as a monument are integral to this striking structure.

The route to the mill crosses a new bridge over the Beeke and leads directly onto the mill grounds. If you are planning a visit, check the access conditions before your trip.

Landscape and trails

Dettum lies near the Altenau. Historically, the Dettumer Bruch extended from Ahlum to Dettum. This history of the landscape adds a different perspective on the village than the post mill: here, the focus is on a former landscape and its geographical extent.

A short section of the trail to Vilgensee between Ahlum and Dettum was improved in 2022. As trail conditions can change, check the current state of the route before planning a hike.

Swimming and culture

Dettum’s outdoor swimming pool combines different swimming areas with diving facilities: it has separate areas for swimmers and non-swimmers, a 3-metre diving tower, a 1-metre diving board and starting blocks. There is a paddling pool and a fountain for small children. This lets you choose between the facilities according to the activity you have in mind. The outdoor pool is seasonal; operating conditions may change. So, before planning a visit, find out about current visiting options.

The Dettum Culture House reveals another side of the village. It comprises two buildings where art and culture can be experienced, explored, created and presented. Together with the mill and the outdoor pool, it offers a choice between architectural and local history, water-based activities and cultural themes. This can help you decide what interests you when planning, rather than scheduling the same kind of outing for every day.

In the wider WolfenbĂĽttel destination

The wider Wolfenbüttel destination offers additional nature and culture themes. The Eulenspiegel tourist route, for example, is about 170 km long and connects Braunschweig, Wolfenbüttel, Schöppenstedt and Helmstedt. Its approximate length and the four named towns provide a framework for planning a broader route; check current route conditions before setting off.

Elm-Lappwald Nature Park is located in the districts of Wolfenbüttel and Helmstedt and covers 470 square kilometres. Away from the main roads, it invites visitors to hike, cycle and explore. Its landscape includes extensive forests, valleys, protected wetlands, heathland, spring-fed rivers and small lakes. This vast natural area complements the destination’s cultural themes.

Wolfenbüttel’s historic half-timbered old town contains around 1,000 half-timbered houses. Wolfenbüttel Castle is the second-largest castle in Lower Saxony and developed from a medieval moated castle. The Herzog August Library was founded in 1572 and is considered the “eighth wonder of the world”. These examples each offer a distinct focus: the historic townscape, the development of a castle complex and the long history of a library.

Choose the right focus

The scale of your trip is key when choosing where to stay. Would you like to focus your plans on Dettum’s post mill, outdoor pool and culture house, or also include nature and cultural attractions in the wider Wolfenbüttel destination? This distinction helps you tailor your search to the experiences you have planned, without treating different places or attractions as interchangeable.
