Zölkow has a rural landscape where the Warnow River, meadows and woodland sit alongside farmland. Small kettle holes with diverse flora and fauna add to the scenery. The area’s architectural and local history also offers plenty to discover, from Kladrum village church to historic buildings in the villages.

Landscape between the Warnow and the woods

Fields and meadows define how the municipality’s land is used. Small kettle holes lie between them, supporting diverse flora and fauna. The Warnow winds through the area, with meadows bordering the river in many places. Larger areas of woodland surround the fields and meadows and invite you to go hiking. At the same time, wind energy shapes the landscape. Several distinct elements therefore sit side by side: open farmland, smaller natural areas, the river and extensive woodland. When planning your visit, it may help to consider what you want to focus on: would you like your stay to center mainly on hiking, or would you prefer to explore the different landscapes and local history?

Architectural history and village culture

Kladrum village church illustrates several periods of construction. Built of fieldstone, it dates to the second half of the 13th century. Its brick east gable features a pointed-arch blind arcade divided into seven sections. The square west tower is topped with an onion dome dating to 1698. Most of the furnishings date from the 18th century and include the pulpit altar built in 1752 by KLINCKMANN of Rostock, as well as a wooden baptismal font from 1650. Older tombstones can be found in the churchyard. The dates make the different periods clear: the main structure, tower dome and furnishings belong to distinct phases in the church’s history.

Local history can also be read in several types of buildings. Historic smallholders’ cottages in the villages belonging to Zölkow are considered evidence of the area’s earlier development. An old forester’s lodge is located in Zölkow. The small church in Groß Niendorf is considered a local attraction associated with Zölkow. These offer a choice of different themes: the construction phases of Kladrum village church, the villages’ earlier development and other historic buildings.
