Kuhlen-Wendorf: Village Churches, Manor Houses and Lake Mickow
Accommodation in Kuhlen-Wendorf
Kuhlen-Wendorf is home to village churches dating from several centuries, manor houses and today’s Wendorf Castle Hotel. Lake Mickow adds a natural highlight: it is part of the Warnow Lakes Nature Reserve. When planning your trip, you can decide whether church architecture, the history of individual manor houses, or the lake and the Warnow should be the main focus.
Churches in Brick, Fieldstone and Half-Timbering
The church in Müsselmow dates from the late 15th century and is a Gothic brick building. Its exterior walls are made of brick, while the tower’s base is built of fieldstone. The village church also has a half-timbered tower and fragments of 18th-century wall paintings. This brings several distinct design features together in one building: masonry, half-timbering and surviving fragments of paintings each tell their own story about its architectural history.
Holzendorf is home to a brick church dating from the 14th century. Opposite it stands a lime tree with a trunk circumference of 7.5 metres. The rectory belonging to the church dates from 1779. The village church in Zaschendorf also has its own architectural style: it is a half-timbered church from the 17th century. Those interested in historic churches will find a range of materials and building periods in these examples—from medieval brick construction to half-timbering.
Manor Houses with Different Stories
The manor houses in Kuhlen-Wendorf span several eras. The manor house in Tessin dates from the 18th century. The manor house in Nutteln, on Lake Mickow, is a single-storey clinker-brick building with small towers dating from the late 19th century. Wendorf Hunting Lodge was built between 1904 and 1906 in the Jugendstil style, also known as Historicism. The manor house in Zaschendorf was built around 1820; it stands on higher ground and is surrounded by a park. After a period in ruins, it has now been partially rebuilt and is inhabited. The differences are not only in the dates of construction: location, architectural style and documented building history each add a distinct emphasis.
The architectural history of these places can be considered through different themes: brick and clinker brick, half-timbering, or the development of an individual manor house. In Zaschendorf, this also includes the transformation from a ruinous state to a partially rebuilt and inhabited house. These different stories give culturally curious travellers a concrete basis for deciding which buildings they would particularly like to take into account when planning their visit.
Lake Mickow and the Warnow
Lake Mickow is part of the Warnow Lakes Nature Reserve. One section of the Warnow can also be precisely identified: it runs from the rock ramp at Zaschendorf-MĂĽsselmow to about 350 metres before its confluence with Lake Mickow and is 2.3 kilometres long. To protect the thick-shelled river mussel, wading while fishing is prohibited year-round along this section. If you plan to fish, check the applicable restrictions and permits in advance. The prohibition and the reason for protecting the mussel are important points to consider if you are including the Warnow in your travel plans.
Choose Accommodation to Suit Your Interests
Wendorf Hunting Lodge is now the Wendorf Castle Hotel. This connects a specific accommodation option with the area’s architectural history: the hunting lodge was built between 1904 and 1906 in the Jugendstil style, also known as Historicism. Check the availability of your preferred accommodation for your planned travel dates. When searching, you can also use your interests as a guide: are the village churches and manor houses your main focus, or would you especially like to visit Lake Mickow and the Warnow? Checking the exact location of an accommodation option can help you match your choice to your travel plans.
