In Staven, historical landmarks meet well-defined trails that offer different ways to explore the village. The listed manor house tells the story of several building phases; the church and dovecote are preserved reminders of the past. The Mecklenburg Lake District Pilgrimage Route and a cycle route through the district of Rossow add an active dimension to the historical focus. When planning your visit, the first question is: would you like to discover Staven’s history, or spend most of your time on the trails?

The manor house and historical landmarks

The manor house in Staven dates from the late 18th century and is a listed building. It was frequently remodelled up to the mid-19th century. Its history therefore involves more than a single date of construction: repeated alterations followed the original building. From 1992 to 1999, the von Badewitz and Göhrs families renovated the estate house. The alterations and the later renovation mark two distinct phases in the building’s history and offer a tangible way to explore the village’s past.

The church and dovecote are also preserved reminders of the village’s past. Another point of reference is the present-day church in the district of Rossow, built in 1914. Staven’s history is therefore not confined to the manor house: its landmarks are spread across several buildings, and Rossow broadens the view to include the district.

On foot along the pilgrimage route

The Friedland–Staven section of the Mecklenburg Lake District Pilgrimage Route is about 12.2 km long. Staven Church is on this section; the next section, Staven–Neubrandenburg, starts there. The church is therefore both a historical landmark and the designated starting point for the next section of the route. Across the wider Mecklenburg Lake District travel region, the pilgrimage route is signposted from northeast to southwest. Check the route details before setting out when planning your stage.

The description of the Staven–Neubrandenburg section also provides guidance along the route: after about 1 km, it joins the road to Warlin and, after a further 350 m or so, follows the Mecklenburg Lake Cycle Route. These details help you understand the route using specific waypoints. They differ from the approximate length given for the Friedland–Staven section and describe another part of the route.

Cycle routes and wider excursion areas

Another route is described to help you find your way by bike: a cycle route runs from Neverin through the district of Rossow towards Brunn, as far as the motorway. The places it passes through and the direction of travel are the specific points of reference here. The pilgrimage route, in contrast, is described through its named sections and waypoints. If you are planning a ride, check the condition of the cycle route before setting out.

The wider Mecklenburg Lake District destination also offers different landscapes and hiking opportunities. MĂĽritz National Park is part of the Mecklenburg Lake District and is characterised by forests, moors, lakes, and extensive meadows. The MĂĽritz National Park Hiking Trail explores this landscape over nine stages: it runs along lakes, through ancient forests, past inland dunes, and to the source of the Havel. Certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours in MĂĽritz National Park, including guided visits to the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest of Serrahn and tours from the water. Alongside the specific pilgrimage section in Staven, you can therefore choose from multi-stage hikes and guided tours across the wider travel region.

Another way to experience nature in the Mecklenburg Lake District is the Damerower Werder bison reserve. It lies on a peninsula in Lake Kölpin and in Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park. Visitors can observe bison there. The reserve also has a forest adventure trail with climbing opportunities, an ant house, an exhibition featuring tactile and visual panels, and a dendrophone.

When looking for accommodation in Staven, you can start by deciding what you would like to focus on: should your stay centre on Staven’s history and local routes, or would you rather plan your trip around the nature and hiking opportunities of the Mecklenburg Lake District? This distinction can help you choose the right area to search for your trip.
