Discover Mildenitz
Accommodation in Mildenitz
Near Groß Görnow, a nature trail leads through the Warnow and Mildenitz Gorge Nature Reserve. A canoe route across several rivers and the history of the town in the wider travel destination of Sternberg add further highlights. When planning your trip around Mildenitz, you can choose between nature and water experiences or a stronger focus on cultural history.
Nature and waterways
The nature trail near Groß Görnow, about 3 km long, leads through one of the largest breakthrough valleys in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Information boards explain the geology and birdlife of the area. The trail thus offers two perspectives on the same natural environment: its geological formation and the birdlife specifically covered on the boards.
A canoe route follows the Mildenitz, Warnow and Unterwarnow rivers through the Warnow and Mildenitz Gorge Nature Reserve. Unlike the nature trail, whose length and topics are clearly defined, the sequence of rivers is the route’s key feature. If you are planning your trip around nature and water, you can consider the two activities as different ways to experience the river landscape. Before making specific plans, it is worth checking the latest information about the nature trail, as route details may change.
Sternberg as the wider travel destination
Sternberg lies in the heart of the Sternberger Seenland Nature Park. Gentle hills, almost 100 lakes, and the Warnow and Mildenitz rivers shape the landscape of the wider travel destination of Sternberg. When choosing an outing, you can therefore consider not only paths through a valley but also lakes and river landscapes.
Comparing specific trails can help you decide: the nature trail near Groß Görnow is about 3 km long; the approximately 4.5-kilometre nature trail around Lake Luckow lies on the edge of the town of Sternberg, in the nature park. One leads through the breakthrough valley, the other around a lake. Their different lengths and landscape themes offer two clearly distinct ways to explore nature in the wider travel destination of Sternberg.
The information boards at Lake Luckow were created as part of a student project: students in grade 12 at David-Frank-Gymnasium Sternberg helped develop and design them in 2006. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing day on Lake Sternberg in a rowboat or pedal boat. The lake is also listed as a local swimming destination; check swimming conditions and facilities seasonally.
Town history and architecture in Sternberg
The entire historic town centre of the wider travel destination of Sternberg, including Mühlentor and the ramparts, has been preserved. In the Middle Ages, the town wall surrounded the old town. Of the four original town gates, only Mühlentor, with its entrance and exit, remains today. These buildings provide a visible connection to the town’s history, while the museums and the town church reveal further chapters of its past.
St. Mary and St. Nicholas Town Church is a three-aisled, five-bay brick hall church with a massive tower. A fresco by Fritz Greve depicts the last state parliament held outdoors at Sagsdorf Bridge, on 20 June 1549. It was there that the Mecklenburg estates decided to adopt the Reformation. Visitors can climb the 66-metre-high church tower: 189 steps lead to a viewing platform beneath the neo-Gothic spire, with views of Sternberg and the surrounding lakes and forests. Access may be seasonal; check current visiting arrangements in advance.
Sternberg Local History Museum is housed in the town’s oldest building. Following extensive renovation, it reopened on 6 April 2024. A total of 14 exhibition rooms cover, among other things, the town’s prehistory and early history; the exhibition also explores important periods in the town’s history and the way of life of earlier generations. Sand-lime brick with fossil inclusions is also on display.
The museum site also has several historical connections: from 1310 to 1329, it was the location of the former castle of the Mecklenburg prince Henry II, known as the Lion. From 1500 until the Reformation in 1549, an Augustinian monastery stood there. Group visits and guided tours of the local history museum can be arranged by appointment.
