Passee brings together archaeological traces, a brick church and a landscape of forests and moors. The church and motte give the village a historic focus; the surrounding area offers a different way to experience Passee: through exploration, active recreation and nature observation. Depending on your interests, you can put cultural history or the landscape at the heart of your trip planning.

Forests, hills and former settlements

The forest complex north and east of Passee contains several burial mounds and Slavic settlement sites. The landscape therefore also tells the story of earlier settlement. Extensive forests, moors and very hilly terrain characterize the area; these features are associated with a diverse range of species. The area around Passee offers opportunities for active recreation, exploration and discovering local fauna and flora.

Wildlife watching is also among the area's nature-related attractions: cranes and greylag geese continue to breed in the Passee area, and the Passee stork continues to nest in a tree. The wildlife you may see can vary depending on the time of year. So, alongside its landscape, Passee also offers those interested in nature specific ways to connect with local wildlife.

Northwest Mecklenburg in a wider context

Within the wider destination of Northwest Mecklenburg, the “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay” landscape area lies to the north, and the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin” lies to the south. The district's landscape is also characterized by terminal moraine ridges, gently rolling ground moraine plateaus, steep and flat coastal sections, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains. At 118 metres, Lünenberg is the highest elevation in Northwest Mecklenburg and is considered an interesting destination for an excursion.

Brick church and Passee motte

The brick church at the church and motte in Passee was first mentioned in 1318. Its history includes several dated details: the mechanical organ was built in 1859 by Friedrich Wilhelm Winzer of Wismar; the Neo-Gothic altar dates from 1866 and was reconsecrated in 2022. Engraved sundials can be found on the south wall. The former freestanding bell tower no longer survives.

The historic site also includes the motte, a well-preserved mound with a ditch and rampart. The church was closed from 2008 to 2012 because it was at risk of collapse. Both details help put the site’s history into context: the motte represents a different aspect of the historic site from the fittings and architectural history of the brick church.

Program events and cultural dates

Visits to the church and motte in Passee are only possible as part of the scheduled program events. Check the current program before your visit. Another cultural offering is the small film festivals organized by the parish in Passee village church; dates vary.

When looking for accommodation in Passee, you can take your trip’s focus into account: visits to the church depend on the scheduled program events, while nature observation depends more on seasonal conditions.
