Benitz: Village History Between the Cycle Route and the Warnow
Accommodation in Benitz
Benitz combines village history with the Berlin–Copenhagen Cycle Route and the Warnow. The cycle route runs directly through the village and invites cycle tourists to stop for a rest; direct access to the Warnow offers opportunities for water sports and fishing. Other attractions include historic buildings, traces of former gravel extraction and regional products. You can therefore choose different focuses for your trip: a break on the cycle route, activities on the water or insights into local history.
Cycle Route, Village Festival and Warnow
A three-day village festival takes place in Benitz every year at the end of June; check the exact dates before your trip. The festival is a clearly time-specific occasion, while the cycle route and the Warnow offer other focuses: cycling, water sports and fishing. This makes it easy to distinguish festival dates from a stay centered on activities along the route or on the water.
Manor House History and Village Architecture
Brookhusen Manor House in Benitz is a listed building and was extended in the Historicist style in 1889. The manor house in Benitz was built in 1815/1816 and is currently being renovated by private owners. The former servants’ quarters of the manor house, with its rustic vaulted cellar, now houses the Benitz Volunteer Fire Brigade. The community center provides rooms for various events held by the “Miteinander Benitz-Brookhusen” association.
Several houses with pointed barrel-vault roofs in Benitz were built by Dutch migrant workers during the gravel extraction period in the 1930s; they are unique in Mecklenburg. These houses combine a distinctive roof shape with the period of gravel extraction and the workers of that time. Alongside the manor house and the estate, they add another facet to the village’s architectural history.
Traces of Gravel Extraction by the Water
Remains of the piles from the former loading jetty have been preserved in Benitz; gravel used to be loaded onto ships there. A landing stage for boats in a side channel of the Warnow was reinforced in 2007 and offered water tourists a place to rest in Benitz. Check the current condition of the landing stage before your trip. The pile remains and the landing stage point to different chapters in the village’s connection to the water: the former transport of gravel and a place for water tourists to take a break.
Village Pond and Regional Products
A bee education trail is being created at the village pond in Benitz, with information boards, insect-friendly flower beds, planted trees and shrubs, and a seating area. The work is dated 2019–2020; check the current condition before visiting. The Regiobox in Benitz offers regional game products, honey and pasta from local artisan producers. This gives you a choice between a nature-focused attraction at the village pond and regional food products for your stay.
