Ziesendorf: Village Church, Monuments and Cycle Path
Accommodation in Ziesendorf
Ziesendorf can be explored through a range of travel interests: Buchholz Village Church tells a compelling story of construction, protected monuments offer further cultural and historical topics, and a cycle path running alongside the road leads from Schwaan to the entrance to the village. This offers different ways to focus a stay—from architecture and local history to a cycling leg.
Church History and Music in Buchholz
Buchholz Village Church in Ziesendorf is a Neo-Gothic brick building, constructed between 1876 and 1878. Neo-Gothic draws on Gothic architectural forms and places the building within an architectural movement of the 19th century. On 1 May 1914, the church burned down to its foundations. The rebuilt village church was consecrated in 1925. Its construction, destruction and reconstruction form a striking sequence: this single building reveals both the historical rupture of 1914 and the subsequent rebuilding.
In addition to church services, the church hosts a variety of concerts, mostly during the annual Buchholz Music Summer. This adds a musical reason to visit alongside the architectural interest. If you are planning to travel for a concert, check the Music Summer dates as part of your planning.
Monuments and Early History
Buchholz is home to the 1914/18 war memorial, the 1871 memorial stone and the Peace Oak, all of which are protected monuments. This broadens the focus beyond the church building to the different forms of commemoration in the village. The Rostock district’s list of monuments dated 10 February 2021 also records an estate park with a gravestone in the park, as well as a 1914/18 war memorial on Hauptstraße in Ziesendorf. If you are planning a special visit to the estate park, check its condition in advance.
Early history is another topic: Ziesendorf is said to have four largely destroyed megalithic tombs. They date mostly to the Late Neolithic; their construction in northern Germany is believed to have taken place between 3500 and 2800 BC. This is a general timeframe, not a precise construction date for each individual tomb. It therefore contrasts markedly with the 19th-century village church.
A Specific Cycling Leg
The cycle path running alongside the L 13 state road from Schwaan to Ziesendorf is officially open. The route is around six kilometres long and reaches the entrance to Ziesendorf at the turn-off for Am MĂĽhlenberg. For planning a cycling trip, this gives you two specific reference points: the approximate route length and a clearly named destination. The cycle path offers a distinct activity alongside the cultural and historical attractions.
More Things to Do in the Wider Rostock Travel Destination
The wider Rostock travel destination offers further experiences. At Wildpark-MV, visitors can explore the park independently or join guided walks, including wolf, owl and evening walks. Schwaan’s climbing and adventure forest has seven courses for children, beginners and advanced climbers; its 116.5-metre Flying Fox zip line runs directly over the lake. In Sternberger Seenland Nature Park, deeply incised breakthrough valleys along the Warnow, numerous lakes, scenic hills and extensive forests are especially suited to hiking and cycling.
For a cultural and historical perspective, the Wolhynian Resettlers Museum in Linstow offers guided tours for groups and individuals. Using ethnographic objects, photographs and documents, the tours present the history of the Volhynian Germans, from the mid-19th century to their settlement in Mecklenburg after the Second World War. The region’s experiences thus range from guided walks and outdoor activities to a museum visit focused on history.
