Blankensee brings together extensive forests, meadows and fields with bodies of water, cycling routes and a long village history. The municipality is located in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and lies entirely within the Am Stettiner Haff Nature Park. When planning your trip, you can focus on different activities: swimming at Obersee, fishing at Untersee, cycling on regional routes, or taking a closer look at the church and the KunstKiosk.

Experience Water and Nature

Obersee is about 1 kilometre from Blankensee and is suitable for swimming thanks to its water quality. Swimming conditions can change seasonally, so it is a good idea to check the latest information before your visit. Untersee is known for its abundant fish and is suitable for fishing. This means there are two different ways to enjoy the water: swimming and fishing.

The entire municipality is part of the Am Stettiner Haff Nature Park. Together with the landscape of forests, meadows and fields, this gives your stay a strong connection to nature. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, you can also combine a visit to Blankensee with local cycling routes and longer-distance cycling routes.

Cycling Routes and Accommodation for Cyclists

Cycling routes lead north, south and east from Blankensee; the Oder–Neiße Cycle Route also passes through the village. Along its regional stretch, it connects Löcknitz, Blankensee and Ueckermünde. The route is mostly flat and paved. This lets you choose between the local routes in the directions described and the regional stretch of the Oder–Neiße Cycle Route. Before setting off, it is worth checking the current route and surface conditions, as detours and conditions may change.

Blankensee has overnight accommodation for cyclists. Availability and prices may change, so check the latest information if you plan to stay there.

Church and Local Culture

The church in Blankensee is more than 500 years old. In 1732, under the patronage of the Stolzenburg estate, it became the principal church. Its eastern section dates from around 1500; in 1777, the church was extended to the west and a tower was added in the same year. The tower later received a copper roof and a gilded weather vane. Its architectural history therefore spans an older eastern section and the extensions of the 18th century.

A more recent milestone in local cultural history is the KunstKiosk in Blankensee, which was created as part of an art project in 2013. A hiking route also follows the track of a former narrow-gauge railway from the former Vorwerk Lenzen to Rieth; historic railway signs mark the route. Signage and trail conditions may change, so it is a good idea to check the latest information before setting out.

Vorpommern-Greifswald in a Broader Context

Across the wider Vorpommern-Greifswald travel region, the district’s three nature parks cover almost 40 percent of its area. The Am Stettiner Haff Nature Park is characterised by undeveloped Haff coastline and meadows, the forests of the Ueckermünder Heide, the lowlands of the Uecker and Randow rivers, and the Brohmer Berge hills. This describes the broader regional setting; Blankensee’s own landscape is characterised by forests, meadows and fields.

The district’s nature and cultural attractions also offer their own highlights. Ueckermünde Zoo is home to more than 1,120 native and exotic animals from 95 species, with feeding demonstrations every day. Animal numbers and feeding demonstrations may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before your visit. In Greifswald, the Pomeranian State Museum displays the Croy Tapestry of 1554, a unique historical and cultural artefact from the Reformation era.
