Koblentz brings together two compelling themes: a landscape shaped by water and moorland, and a building with a distinctive history of use. In the Großer Koblentzer See Nature Reserve, rare habitats meet a wetland bird area of regional importance. The Mausoleum of the Knights of Eickstedt adds a tangible piece of local history to the natural landscape.

Moorland and protected habitats

Großer Koblentzer See lies in a low-gradient side valley of the Randow lowlands, shaped by meltwater. The valley became waterlogged during the Holocene; today it forms a through-flow fen, punctuated by occasional mineral-soil ridges. The nature reserve covers 269 hectares and lies between Krugsdorf and the municipality of Koblentz. The lake, moorland and mineral ridges give the landscape more variety than a single view across the water.

Protected areas include an originally mesotrophic valley fen pool with adjoining through-flow fen areas, an inland salt site that is very rare in Western Pomerania, and a calcareous fen. Together, these habitats show how varied the protected areas are. The site is also of regional importance as a breeding, migration and stopover area for waterbirds.

Birdwatching and trails

Two observation hides on the southeastern shore of Großer Koblentzer See offer particularly good views in autumn of geese and cranes coming in to roost in the evening. Guided walks are also available for observing the geese and cranes that stop here in autumn. Check dates in advance, as schedules may vary.

A path leads to the lake behind the old manor house in Koblentz. The path from Koblentz to Uhlenkrug runs directly past the nature reserve to the north. When planning, it is worth checking the condition of the path and its signage, as surfaces and signs may change. The Koblentz lakes also offer opportunities to enjoy the sunset; the weather and season shape the experience.

Mausoleum and village church

The present-day church building in Koblentz was originally built as the von Eickstedt family mausoleum. Friedrich Hitzig, a student of Schinkel, built it in 1853–1854 in the late Classicist style as a resting place for the Knights of Eickstedt. From around 1897 to 2013, the mausoleum was used as a village church. Its construction date, architect and former use give the site a clear historical significance.
