Gently rolling villages, springs and streams characterise Kenz-Küstrow on the Bodden coast. In Kenz, the history of St. Marien Church meets that of the spring village; from the west, Küstrow offers sweeping views across the landscape and the Bodden. In Dabitz, the harbour provides a different focal point.

St. Marien and the history of the spring

St. Marien Church in Kenz was built around 1398 in the Brick Gothic style, near a healing spring. The spring made Kenz the first spa town in what is now Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The restored former pilgrimage church is a landmark that brings together architectural history and the history of the spring village. Brick Gothic combines Gothic architectural forms with brick as a building material—a vivid trace of architectural history.

The church served as the burial church for the Pomeranian dukes. Its choir windows are particularly remarkable: they form the largest surviving collection of early medieval stained glass of this kind in northern Germany. This also makes the church interesting for travellers who are keen to explore medieval art and its design.

A wooden cenotaph for Barnim VI dates from 1410. A cenotaph is a symbolic tomb; the term helps explain this special form of remembrance. According to one account, the fountain house in Kenz was rebuilt in 2004 based on plans from the 18th century.

Springs, village centres and views of the Bodden

At the Kenz spring, a pump provides visitors with fresh, refreshing water. The setting of the church, spring and trees invites you to linger from spring to late autumn. Seasonal access conditions can change, so check them before your visit.

The municipality’s villages also offer varied landscapes. Rubitz’s one-hectare village centre brings together springs, mature trees and thatched houses. It invites you to take your time exploring the village centre and its houses. Near Küstrow, it is worth looking in the other direction: approaching the village from the west, you can see far across the surrounding landscape and the Bodden.
