In Schlangen, a medieval wall painting, a village museum, and a variety of tour formats sit side by side. From the approximately 21-kilometer S-Weg to digital cycling routes and an archaeological adventure trail, the themes range from landscape and activity to the Bronze Age. You can plan your stay around a wide range of interests.

Village history between the church tower and Haus Fischer

A 13th-century Christophorus secco painting is located in the Romanesque tower of the Evangelical Reformed Church in Schlangen. The wall painting is considered the oldest depiction of Saint Christopher in Westphalia and was rediscovered during renovation work in 1970. It is not regularly open to the public; visits are possible only occasionally. If you would like to see the artwork, it is best to ask the municipality about the possibility of a visit in advance.

A second historical trail leads to the Schlangen Village Museum. Since 1993, it has been housed in Haus Fischer, a building constructed in 1889 from locally sourced limestone rubble. This brings together two distinct connections to local history: the medieval wall painting in the Romanesque tower and a house whose construction date and locally sourced building material are part of its story.

Hiking and cycling routes on different scales

The S-Weg is an approximately 21-kilometer circular hiking trail around Schlangen, Kohlstädt, and Oesterholz-Haustenbeck. It passes through a varied cultural landscape and several nature reserves. Its marker is a white S inside a circle on a black background. When planning, check local notices for temporary diversions.

There are five digital Schlänger cycling routes for cyclists, all starting and ending in Schlangen. They range from 15.7 to 43.5 kilometers and are not signposted; instead, GPX data is available digitally. Check the Teuto-Navigator before your ride, as routes and digital access formats may change.

The Senneradweg covers a longer distance: it is approximately 82 kilometers long, runs around the Senne military training area, and touches or crosses the municipality of Schlangen. Overall, it passes through or along eight towns and municipalities. Unlike the S-Weg, which is described as a circular hiking trail, this is a considerably longer route connected to several municipalities. Check with the route operator for current route details.

The Archaeological Adventure Trail in Oesterholz-Haustenbeck offers another theme to explore. Two life-size reconstructed burial mounds illustrate Bronze Age burial customs. Hiking, cycling, and archaeology thus offer different ways to explore the area around Schlangen.

Schlangen and the wider travel destination of Lippe

Looking beyond Schlangen to Lippe reveals a broader hiking network: the Lippe hiking trail network spans approximately 2,000 kilometers. It includes a section of European long-distance path E1, as well as the award-winning Hermannshöhen and Hansaweg trails. These routes are part of the wider travel destination of Lippe and offer a regional connection for guests who do not want to limit their plans to individual local trails.

When looking for accommodation in Schlangen, it may help to distinguish between local tours and the wider hiking network. Are you mainly planning to explore the circular hiking trail, one of the digital cycling routes, or the historic sites? Or would you like to consider Lippe as a hiking region as a whole?
