Ense offers a variety of things to explore during a stay: the history of Haus Füchten, church architecture, traces of a former monastery, geological insights and cycling routes. Depending on your interests, you can discover different sides of the municipality—from historic buildings to tours through landscapes and small villages.

Haus FĂĽchten: Manor house and architectural history

Haus FĂĽchten is a manor house in the western part of the municipality of Ense. A Baroque bridge dating from 1698 leads to the main house; on the first floor, the grand hall is decorated with figurative and ornamental stucco. Its architectural details give the site a distinctive historic character.

The site’s earlier history is also documented: a castle on the site of Haus Füchten was first mentioned in 1298, when the fief was granted to the knight Goswin von Soest. Around 1700, Caspar Diedrich von Droste zu Erwitte had the castle demolished and a palace built on the hillside. The dates and the change from castle to palace trace a long history of construction.

Church architecture and traces of Himmelpforten Monastery

The small, two-bay St. Lambertus Basilica stands in the center of the village of Bremen. Built toward the end of the 12th century, it adds an example of medieval church architecture to the history of manor houses.

South-east of Niederense, fragments of the foundation walls remain at the former site of the Cistercian convent of Himmelpforten. A white cross marks the site of the former abbey church. The grounds of the former monastery can be explored on foot or by bicycle. Here, visible remains and the site’s former use take center stage—a different way to engage with history than the buildings in Bremen and at Haus Füchten.

Geological history and views over the Ruhr Valley

The former quarry at Pfarrwald in Ense dates back to the early 19th century. At the foot of the Haarstrang ridge, it offers a striking glimpse into geological history: typical rock strata from the Sauerland and the Westphalian Bay overlap there. This rare phenomenon can be explored particularly well at the quarry. Alongside architectural and local history, geology is another focus in Ense.

Another scenic viewpoint can be found at FĂĽrstenberg Chapel on FĂĽrstenberg, which overlooks the Ruhr Valley. The quarry draws attention to the rock strata; at the chapel, the view shapes the experience. These are two different ways to include nature and landscape in your travel plans.

Explore Ense by bike

The PanoramaRoute runs through the Ense villages of Niederense, Höingen and Bremen to Haus Füchten, where it joins the RuhrtalRadweg. It passes right through Ense and connects the MöhnetalRadweg with the RuhrtalRadweg. This provides a specific route connection between the cycling routes mentioned and Haus Füchten.

The Enser-Dörfer-Tour takes a different approach: this cycling route passes through landscapes and small villages, as well as along quiet forest and farm tracks. For most of its length, it follows the well-signposted Südwestfalen cycle network. While the PanoramaRoute stands out for its connections to other cycling routes and its course through the local villages, the Enser-Dörfer-Tour is primarily a ride through rural landscapes and smaller settlements.

The Haarweg, the Ruhne / Waltringen wind farm and the Rasthäuschen are also connected to the regional cycle network and can be reached by bicycle. If you plan to ride one of the routes, check the latest route information before setting off, as details may change. When choosing accommodation in Ense, you can start with your interests: the history of manor houses, churches and monastery remains, geological insights or cycling.
