Spabrücken: Church Art, Pilgrim Routes and Monastic Life
Accommodation in Spabrücken
Discover Spabrücken through three themes: the history and furnishings of the Church of the Assumption of Mary, pilgrim and hiking trails, and stays at the monastery. They differ considerably in their time frames. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether church art, a specific route or a longer stay should be the main focus.
Church and Pilgrim Tradition
The Church of the Assumption of Mary was built in the Baroque style between 1731 and 1736. At the same time, it preserves architectural connections to a Gothic predecessor dating from 1359. At the center of the high altar is a seated Madonna from the 14th century; a Pietà from the same century is located in a niche on the left side of the church. Life-size wooden figures can be found on the high altar, the side altars and the wall brackets. The rest of the furnishings were apparently made locally by Franciscans in the 18th century.
Spabrücken is linked to a pilgrimage tradition through the Black Madonna of the Soon, which probably began in the 14th century. The monastery buildings immediately north of the church were built in the 1720s. Different periods thus converge here: the Gothic predecessor building, the Baroque church, older Marian figures and the later monastery complex.
Another historic landmark lies in neighbouring Dalberg: the village borders Spabrücken to the southeast, and the castle ruins of the same name are located there.
Hiking and Pilgrim Routes
Spabrücken is a stop on the Nahehöhenweg. The final stage, approximately 24 kilometres long, starts here and leads to Bingen am Rhein. The Bad Sobernheim–Spabrücken section is about 22.5 kilometres long and takes approximately five hours to walk. The two sections are similar in length, but the time estimate refers to the section from Bad Sobernheim. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a hike.
Another option is the 20-kilometre pilgrimage route from Oberheimbach to Spabrücken. It passes the Kreuzkapelle, Drei Steinen, Daxweiler, the Guldenbachtal, Seibersbach, Dörrebach and Aschborner Hof. Unlike the information on the Nahehöhenweg, the focus here is on a series of named places along the route. Before setting out, check trail conditions and, for this route, access as well.
Stays at the Monastery
Kloster Spabrücken offers retreats lasting a few days, a week or longer. The “Kloster auf Zeit” programme allows you to live with the small community for a week, a month or longer. The retreat is defined in days or weeks; living with the community is explicitly part of the “Kloster auf Zeit” programme. Before travelling, confirm retreat availability and the arrangements for “Kloster auf Zeit”.
Another Architectural Highlight in Bad Kreuznach
In Bad Kreuznach, the bridge houses offer a distinctive glimpse into architectural history. Built from 1480 onwards due to a lack of space, the half-timbered houses stand on the piers of the old Nahe bridge, which dates from around 1300. This reveals two distinct building phases: the older bridge and the houses later built on its piers. This regional cultural highlight complements Spabrücken’s church and monastery history with a different architectural theme.
