Osann-Monzel: Vineyards, Views and History
Accommodation in Osann-Monzel
Osann-Monzel is a wine village in a high valley around 80 metres above the Moselle. Vineyards, viewpoints, various trails and historic sites give your stay several distinct focal points. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether hiking, views of the vineyards and river, or the history of Osann and Monzel should be the deciding factor.
Views of Vineyards and the Moselle
From the Hüttenkopf viewpoint, you can see the Monzeler Kätzchen and Osanner Rosenberg vineyards. The view stretches downstream towards Landshut Castle and upstream towards Neumagen. This brings both the vineyards and the course of the Moselle into view. The Monzeler Kätzchen viewpoint offers a different perspective: the path there passes several wineries and runs through the vineyards; from there, you can look towards Bernkastel-Kues. When choosing between the two viewpoints, you can also consider whether you would like to focus on the named sights or include the path through the vineyards in your day.
Above Monzel, the Ruheinsel (Rest Island) is located on the Monzeler Hüttenkopfweg. The rest area has seating, views of the Moselle Valley and vineyards, as well as an insect hotel, and is accessible at any time. The Monzeler Hüttenkopf itself is 423.4 metres high and can be reached via a shaded forest path. The places described therefore offer both a spot to rest and a route through the forest.
Hiking Trails and Stages
Two stages with different connections are described to help you plan your route on the Moselsteig Trail. Stage 9 ends at St. Nicholas Church in Monzel; from there, a direct 0.9-kilometre access path leads to Kesten. Stage 10 runs from Osann-Monzel past slate cliffs and the Brauneberger Juffer vineyard. The first detail identifies a specific access route to Kesten, while the second highlights distinctive landscape features along the stage.
The Schiffswanderweg and the Mosel Camino also provide information about their routes: the Schiffswanderweg begins at the Catholic parish church in Osann and continues through Monzel towards Kesten. Stage 5 of the Mosel Camino reaches (Osann-)Monzel after Traben-Trarbach, Bernkastel-Kues, Lieser and the Brauneberger Juffer. If you compare routes by their named stops, you will find different connections around Osann-Monzel here.
Cyclists can also include a specific route: the Eifel Pilgrim Cycling Route runs through Osann-Monzel between Himmerod, Klausen and the Moselle. The Hüttenkopf viewpoint can be reached via several hiking trails and the Mosel Radtour zum Staunen E-Bike tour. Check the availability of the relevant route locally before your trip.
Baroque Architecture and the History of Winegrowing
St. Nicholas Church in Monzel was built in 1784 as a Baroque hall church. The church also contains Baroque Stations of the Cross dating from the 18th century. Another glimpse into the history of winegrowing can be found at the Eichhaus in Osann: from 1879 to 1972, it served winemakers from Osann, Monzel and the surrounding area as an official wine-cask measuring station. The church and the Eichhaus therefore represent different historical themes, from architecture to the former work associated with wine.
Osann-Monzel as a Search Destination
The wider Bernkastel-Wittlich destination also brings together the volcanic Eifel, the romantic Moselle Valley and the Hunsrück, rich in forests and meadows. This broader landscape setting can complement your choice of location if you would like to include other landscapes in your travel plans as well as the wine village.
