Ürzig combines Moselsteig Trail stages with the Rotschwänzchen Trail and gardens on steep vineyard slopes. Hiking ideas range from longer stages with a designated difficulty level to a tour with a stated duration and a variety of stops. The gardens also give the town a distinctive character: paths, steps, dry-stone walls and small terraces are just as much a part of the landscape as herbs, perennials and roses.

Two hiking formats

Ürzig is the endpoint of two Moselsteig Trail stages: the moderately difficult stage from Bernkastel-Kues is 17.5 km long, while the equally moderate stage to Traben-Trarbach covers 15 km. Their lengths distinguish the two routes, while both share the same difficulty level. Route conditions can change; check them before setting out.

The Rotschwänzchen Trail offers a different format. It starts on the banks of the Moselle and takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Stops along the way include old half-timbered houses, a woodland play area, picnic spots, views of the Moselle and vineyards. There is also a sound installation, a stone-building area, the herb garden and the adjoining rose garden. For families, the play area and picnic spots are tangible features of the tour; they add opportunities for play and breaks to the impressions of the landscape and townscape.

The trail is not accessible and requires sturdy footwear. Check accessibility and trail conditions locally before setting out.

Gardens on the vineyard slopes

The Ürzig herb garden and adjoining rose garden lie on steep vineyard slopes. Paths, steps, dry-stone walls and small terraces shape the terrain. The plantings include Mediterranean perennials, herbs and native shrubs; more than 20 varieties of wild and cultivated roses also grow there. The combination of planting and landscaped hillside features forms a distinctive focus among Ürzig’s hiking ideas.

At Erbeskopf, the National Park Gateway provides information about nature and the environment. Its interactive multimedia exhibition focuses on forests and moors. In addition to Ürzig’s local hiking and garden attractions, visitors can therefore choose from other landscapes and nature themes in the wider destination. The Manderscheid Castle Trail in the wider destination of Bernkastel-Wittlich is a moderately difficult, 5.4-kilometre circular route around the castles of Manderscheid.
