Echtershausen combines its location on the Prüm with forest trails and a rich local history. The village is part of the South Eifel Nature Park and lies on the northwestern arm of a reservoir, on the right bank of the Prüm. County Road 71 connects Echtershausen to Bitburg to the south via Hamm and Biersdorf am See.

Hikes with Different Routes

The Stausee-Prümtal route loops around Echtershausen and passes through the open, and at some points dense, forests of the Eifel. The route is defined not only by its shape, but also by the changing sections of woodland. It offers a distinctive view of the landscape around the village.

Two other trails with specific destinations also start in Echtershausen: Stage 4 of the Eifelverein Willibrordus Trail leads from here to Oberweis and is 15.5 kilometers long. From Echtershausen, the Biersdorf Reservoir Route follows the Willibrordus Trail via Ringelstein and descends to the Bitburger Reservoir after 3.7 kilometers. The stage to Oberweis is therefore considerably longer; the routes also differ in their destinations. This information can help you plan your hike according to the distance and route you prefer.

Historic Traces in the Village

The heritage list, as of June 24, 2024, includes the Catholic Chapel of St. Mary at Hauptstraße 12, a plastered building with a roof turret dating from 1892. A sacristy was added later. Also listed is the Quereinhaus at Hauptstraße 6. It dates from the first half of the 19th century and has a somewhat later smithy extension.

A slate rock in the village center recalls the Prüm’s former western course around the village. The heritage list of June 24, 2024, also includes two wayside crosses: the cross west of the sunken-lane junction leading into the village is dated 1778. Another stands at the eastern edge of the forest beside the stream that marks Echtershausen’s western boundary. It dates from 1770; its finial cross is newer.

The Devonium in Waxweiler presents complex topics in paleontology and the science of fossil life in a playful way. The Westwall Museum’s military history exhibition offers insights into the subject in the underground passageways and rooms of a bunker.

The approximately 700-year-old Rittersdorf moated castle has remained almost unchanged since it was built and offers a glimpse of late medieval and early modern Renaissance domestic culture.
