Hamm brings together a sharply winding stretch of the Prüm Valley and the history of Hamm Castle. The settlement lies below the castle; the fortified complex stands on the ridge, between forest and river. Hamm Castle can be visited. This makes it possible to discover the area through both its landscape and its architectural history.

Discover the History of the Castle and Palace

The medieval fortification in Hamm is mentioned as early as 1052. Among the oldest parts of Hamm Castle are a keep from the 14th century and a gatehouse from the 16th century. The complex underwent extensive restoration from 1885 to 1896 and was restored again in 1998. The architecture of Hamm Castle also tells the story of several building phases: its core dates to the late Middle Ages, while its present-day appearance dates to 1895/96. Hamm Castle is listed as a monument zone in the Rhineland-Palatinate cultural heritage register.

Notable structures include a curtain wall dating largely from the 14th century, two towers, and a keep from the same period. The two-storey castle chapel dates to 1700 and contains three Renaissance tombs. The four-storey castle residence bears the date 1586; its core is thought to date to the 14th century. Those interested in historic architectural forms will find a variety of details in one place: the fortifications, towers, chapel, and residence each represent different aspects of the complex.

The Prüm Valley, Forest, and Castle Setting

Hamm lies in a sharply winding section of the Prüm Valley below Hamm Castle. The castle stands on a ridge above a small settlement, surrounded by forests and encircled by the Prüm. This setting brings together the river, wooded slopes, and the elevated position of the complex, without requiring a particular hiking route. Hamm’s municipal area covers 174 hectares, of which 107 hectares are forested. These figures give the landscape a tangible scale: forest makes up a large part of this small municipal area.

Holiday Apartments in the Side Wing

The accommodation at Hamm Castle is located in a side wing of the fortified complex. The wing is accessed from the inner courtyard. Stays can be booked for a minimum of two nights. When planning, it is worth checking the minimum stay and accommodation conditions in advance, as arrangements may change.

The spacious inner courtyard has facilities for children to play and for barbecuing. Whether these can be used during a particular stay may depend on the accommodation arrangements. When choosing a place to stay, the historic setting is therefore not the only point of interest; it is also worth checking which courtyard facilities are included under the specific conditions of the stay.

Hiking Trails and a Destination by the Water

Circular Route No. 22 in the South Eifel Nature Park passes through the Echtersbach Valley and starts and ends in Wißmannsdorf. The route also includes Hammer Büsch, a woodland slope, and offers panoramic views of Hamm Castle. Near Biersdorf am See, the circular route runs parallel for several kilometres to the Bitburger Brewery Route, a Nordic walking trail. These route sections help orient visitors among the valley, forest, and castle views, without specifying a particular walking time or difficulty level.

Another landscape highlight is the Bitburg Reservoir. There is an approximately five-kilometre-long promenade along the shore for walking. This offers two different attractions: views of Hamm Castle along the circular trail and a longer promenade by the water. Visitors planning their days around cultural and landscape themes can consider these destinations separately and check the relevant visiting conditions in advance.

More to Discover in the Wider Destination of Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm

The wider destination of Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm offers more to explore. The Mühlenberger Stollen Bleialf Visitor Mine has a mining trail with numerous information boards about the area’s mining history. One-hour guided tours of the tunnel explain ore mining in Bleialf, from geology to applied technology. Check seasonal visitor information before your visit.

The Devonium in Waxweiler presents complex concepts in palaeontology and the science of fossil life in an engaging way. The Westwall Museum houses a military history exhibition on three accessible floors of a bunker, as well as in underground passages and rooms. The two attractions focus on different subjects: fossil life and science on the one hand, and military history in a bunker complex on the other.

The water castle of Rittersdorf, around 700 years old, has been preserved almost unchanged since it was built and offers an impressive picture of late medieval and early modern Renaissance residential culture. The castle also has a privately run restaurant serving fine regional cuisine; check that the restaurant is open before your trip. This wider destination can therefore also be explored through historic residential culture and dining.
