Sankt Julian: Oil Mill, Disc Golf and Cycle Path
Accommodation in Sankt Julian
Sankt Julian combines a long pilgrimage history with active experiences and unusual technology. The first documented mention of the village dates back to 1290; the recorded form is “apud Sanctam Julianam”. A chapel founded to house the relics of Saint Julia soon made Sankt Julian a place of pilgrimage. Today, the historic oil mill, the Glan-Blies Cycle Route and the intergenerational park offer visitors several different ways to explore the village.
Oil Mill and Pilgrimage History
The historic oil mill is one of the last working oil mills in Europe. Visits are possible year-round by prior arrangement; please arrange your visit before you arrive. The oil extraction process is now used only for demonstrations. As a result, the historic technology takes centre stage during a visit. Experts consider the peeling or tanning mechanism, with its shaking device and wind house, unique in Germany.
The mill adds a different focus to the village’s earlier history: while its first documented mention dates back to 1290, the technology tells the story of a process that is now demonstrated to visitors. If you would like to include culture and technology in your travel plans, be sure to arrange your visit in advance.
Activities and Time Together
The accessible intergenerational park, covering around 10,000 square metres, serves as an excursion destination, a place to relax and a central meeting point in Sankt Julian. Facilities include an exercise trail, fitness equipment for adults, ground-level trampolines, a wheelchair-accessible carousel and a boules court. The different facilities offer a variety of activities, from exercise and fitness to play and boules.
There is also a free 12-hole disc golf course. It is beginner-friendly and suitable for families and children. Play a round of disc golf on its 12 holes.
There is also a vending machine at the intergenerational park selling eggs, pasta, honey, homemade canned sausage and Rohesser cured sausages. The products come from within a radius of about ten kilometres; the selection may change. A public, accessible toilet certified by “Reisen für Alle” (“Travel for All”) is located near the historic oil mill and the draisine route. Before your trip, check whether the public, accessible toilet is currently available for use.
Cycle Route and Regional Highlights
Sankt Julian is located directly on the Glan-Blies Cycle Route and the draisine route. These routes add an active dimension to the village alongside the history of the oil mill. One way to reach Sankt Julian in the wider Kusel destination area is to take the train to Lauterecken and then cycle around 8.4 kilometres along the Glan-Blies Cycle Route. Check the timetable and route in advance.
For longer hiking plans, the wider Kusel destination area offers a different kind of excursion: the Veldenz Hiking Trail is around 60 kilometres long, passes through two nature reserves and can be divided into five stages. It starts at Lichtenberg Castle above Thallichtenberg and ends in Lauterecken. Its profile also includes the “Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe” designation. Check current route and certification details before setting out.
In the wider Kusel destination area, Lichtenberg Castle offers another cultural highlight. It is 425 metres long, one of the longest castle ruins in Germany and the largest castle complex in the Palatinate. Inside are the Palatinate Musicians Museum and the Geoskop. The region thus brings together a variety of themes: Sankt Julian’s pilgrimage history and oil-mill technology, alongside Kusel’s castle and museum history.
