Horn is located between the regional centres of Simmern and Kastellaun. Here, a protected Baroque church, a ring-wall fortification dating from the 10th or 11th century, literary history and contemporary art come together. There is also an annual arts festival and opportunities to combine your stay with hiking or cycling. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you are visiting for a specific cultural event or mainly want to include the historic sites and themed trail.

Church, Ensemble and Literary Connections

The Protestant church in Horn is a protected Baroque hall church dating from 1781/82. Together with the Baroque cemetery wall and cemetery, it forms a protected ensemble. The defining cultural features of the town therefore include not only the church building, but also its historic setting.

Another connection is to Wilhelm Philip Oertel, known as W. O. von Horn. He was born in Horn in 1798 and wrote novels and short stories. This links the town’s history with literature: alongside the protected architectural ensemble is the story of a writer whose name is closely associated with Horn.

Horner Burg: Ring Wall and Trail Stop

South of Horn lies the protected Horner Burg, a ring-wall defensive fortification dating from the 10th or 11th century. It is quite different from the Baroque church: here, the focus is on a site with a medieval defensive function. Horner Burg is directly on a hiking trail and can be visited free of charge.

The site features a replica moat, a bridge and benches for hikers. The themed route “Romans, Knights, Nuns” also leads to Horn along forest and meadow paths; Horner Burg is a stop on the route where visitors can explore and rest. The themed cycling route is considered rideable year-round, although seasonal conditions can affect cycling. Check current trail conditions before planning a trip.

Sculpture in the Garden and Art Events

After 37 years of exhibiting in Mainz, Galerie Rehberg moved to Horn. Its focus is on sculptures that combine visual and tactile qualities. Sculptures are displayed outdoors in a large, old garden—a different setting for experiencing large-scale sculpture than an indoor exhibition. The gallery presents four exhibitions a year. Visits must be arranged in advance by email or telephone; get in touch before making firm plans to visit.

The annual Kunstfest Horn is another reason to plan your trip around a specific date. It takes place in early September at the community centre and is designed as an all-day interdisciplinary festival featuring dance, literature, music and visual art. Check the programme and dates for the relevant year when planning your trip.

Hiking, Events and Seasons

One of TuS Horn’s main events is an annual International Folk Hike. If you want to include this hiking day in your plans, check the dates for the relevant year. The Horner Grillhütte is available for hire from April to October; enquire in advance about the current booking conditions. This seasonal availability may be particularly relevant if you are considering a spring, summer or autumn stay.

The Wider Region: Rhein-Hunsrück

The wider destination of Rhein-Hunsrück encompasses landscapes ranging from the heights of the Hunsrück to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Its cultural landscape has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. Certified premium hiking trails in the Rhein-Hunsrück district include the Soonwaldsteig, Saar-Hunsrück-Steig and Rheinburgenweg. The district also has extensive, well-developed and signposted cycling routes along the Rhine and through the Hunsrück.

The wider Rhein-Hunsrück region also offers its own culinary attractions: Hunsrück cuisine includes stuffed dumplings, Hunsrück-style grilled roast pork and game dishes. The district also highlights regional specialities and Middle Rhine wine from high-quality vineyards. This adds a distinct regional perspective to Horn’s local cultural history.

Choose a Focus for Your Stay When Looking for Accommodation

If you are considering Horn for a cultural stay, the church, Horner Burg, gallery and event dates offer specific points of reference. If hiking or cycling in the wider region is more important, include the Rhein-Hunsrück district in your plans.
