Sargenroth combines trails through nature with an unusual connection to film history. The Traumschleife Soonwald trail passes through the village: following wooded paths and stream valleys, it passes the Nunkirche and the Bismarck Tower. Along the way, panoramic views open up across the Soonwald, Idarwald and HunsrĂĽck. Artificial film graves have also been preserved in the cemetery near the Nunkirche. When planning your trip, it is worth first deciding whether hiking, cycling or culture will be the main focus of your visit.

Hiking and Cycling in Sargenroth

The Traumschleife Soonwald is certified with 65 experience points. Nature and cultural attractions come together along this route: stream valleys and forest paths are part of the trail, as are the Nunkirche and the Bismarck Tower. The route and its certification may change, so check the current conditions with the trail operator before setting out.

Other hiking and cycling options that pass through Sargenroth include the Sponheimer Weg, the Soonwaldschleife and the Schinderhannes-Soonwald cycle route. To choose between them, you can compare the detailed route description of the Traumschleife with these other route names.

A Film Location at the Nunkirche

The cemetery near the Nunkirche served as the cemetery in Schabbach in Heimat 3. Scenes depicting the burials of Anton and Rudi Molz were filmed there. The artificial film graves are still preserved. This gives Sargenroth a specific film-history connection alongside its landscape: the events are linked to the cemetery location mentioned above.

The Wider Landscape: Rhein-HunsrĂĽck

The wider destination of Rhein-Hunsrück offers a broader landscape setting. The Rhein-Hunsrück district covers large areas of the Hunsrück, which is part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left-bank section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The Hunsrück plateau is joined to the south by quartzite ridges such as the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley area, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary.

The UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley is also part of this regional context: parts of the HunsrĂĽck-Mittelrhein municipal association and the town of Boppard in the Rhein-HunsrĂĽck district are included. The site was recognized as a World Heritage Site in 2002. These landscape and cultural themes offer a different focus from the trails and film history directly associated with Sargenroth.

Regional Cultural and Hiking Destinations

The House of Regional History in Kastellaun explores the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War. Thematic exhibitions, information panels and original documents present this period. From April 25, 2026, the museum will be open Thursdays and Fridays from 12:00 to 17:00, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11:00 to 17:00. Check the opening hours again before your visit.

The Rhein-HunsrĂĽck district offers numerous hiking trails, including the certified premium long-distance trail Soonwaldsteig. The Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig crosses the HunsrĂĽck via Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard; it is 410 kilometers long in total, divided into 27 stages. Its stages make it an option for planning a multi-day hike. For cycling trips during the 2026 season, the RadBus line 629, the RadBus HunsrĂĽck-Mosel, supports tours on the Schinderhannes cycle route between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen and on the Schinderhannes-Untermosel cycle route between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. Check the timetable before your trip, as later seasons may differ.

Another regional highlight is the Geierlay suspension bridge between Mörsdorf and Sosberg: it is 360 meters long and 100 meters high. Several circular trails around the bridge range from 3 to 14 kilometers, with the visitor center in Mörsdorf as both the start and finish. The Traumschleife Geierlay is 6.6 kilometers long and rated moderate. The Rhein-Hunsrück district’s culinary profile includes regional specialties and Middle Rhine wine from high-quality vineyards.

You can tailor your search for accommodation to the kind of trip you have planned.
