Willmenrod between Basalt and Village History
Accommodation in Willmenrod
Willmenrod offers two different ways to plan your trip: explore historical traces in the village or enjoy hiking around the Watzenhahn. Forest and basalt shape the landscape there, while the village’s history can be seen in its half-timbered buildings, former rectory buildings and communal buildings. This lets you tailor your stay more towards active days outdoors or towards architectural history and local traditions.
Hiking between forest and basalt
The Wäller Tour and GeoRoute Watzenhahner Riesen is a challenging circular hike covering 13.4 kilometres. It includes 327 metres of ascent and the same amount of descent, and has been awarded the Explorer Tour certificate. These details give you concrete figures to help plan your day. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they can change.
Westerwald basalt and numerous rock formations shape the route, including the Watzenhahner Riesen geotope. Along the trail, nature is reclaiming former basalt and clay pits. These areas provide habitats for rare animals and plants. The route combines views of striking rock formations with landscapes where former extraction sites are once again providing natural habitats.
The Watzenhahn forest area offers hiking destinations with viewpoints and quiet spots. Nearby Stromberg is a protected natural monument: a distinctive wooded basalt hill with unusual rock formations. The Wandernder Berg is a northern spur of the Watzenhahn. In addition to the well-defined circular route, the forest landscape and geological features therefore offer further highlights to include in your plans.
Cycling in the regional context
Willmenrod is one of the municipalities connected by the Wallmerod–Westerburg railway section. The former Westerwaldquerbahn line between Wallmerod and Westerburg is now part of the Westerwaldschleife cycle route. This 11.8-kilometre route is fully paved, has gentle gradients and good signposting, and includes rest areas. Its route profile differs from the challenging Watzenhahn circular hike: the cycle route is described in terms of its surface and gradients, while the hike is defined by its ascents and descents.
Village history in buildings and traditions
Willmenrod’s listed buildings include former outbuildings of the rectory, several half-timbered houses dating from the 18th century, and a former school from around 1930. The Steinerne Burghaus is the oldest building in the village and formerly served as the residence of the von Wernbolderode family. These buildings represent different chapters in the village’s history.
The parish church complex forms an ensemble comprising the church, cemetery, community hall, rectory and outbuilding. Visitors can enter the Protestant church on Saturdays and Sundays from Pentecost to the Harvest Festival; outside this period, the key is available from the rectory. Check the seasonal access information before your visit.
Since 1981, the Martin-Luther-Haus has served as a Protestant community hall; it was formerly a barn belonging to the rectory. In September, the building is the focal point of the Backesdörferfest. As the current festival date is important for planning, you should check it before travelling.
According to the village’s history, after the 1805 village fire, Willmenrod was rebuilt with straight streets and space between houses in accordance with French regulations. The coat of arms also recalls earlier times: it represents the importance of the five mills and the Elbbach at that time.
