Flechtingen combines an impressive moated castle with nature and history. The castle stands on a rocky island in the lake; two causeways lead to the mainland. Other highlights include a Kneipp centre, the castle mill and a park landscape with seasonal blossoms. You can shape your stay around a range of interests: exploring the history of the architecture, discovering nature, or enjoying the activities on offer in the town.

A moated castle with a long architectural history

Flechtingen moated castle was first mentioned around 1307. Built as a fortified castle, it has a keep, shield walls and rubble-stone defensive walls. The heart of the castle is arranged around a triangular courtyard—a distinctive ground plan that gives the complex its own architectural character.

In the early 15th century, the fortress was redesigned and subsequently referred to as a palace. The complex thus tells the story of two building phases: the fortified castle was followed by the palace. If you are interested in history, you can start with this transformation and relate the complex’s appearance to its development.

Castle lake and island

The artificially dammed castle lake surrounds the palace. Flechtingen Castle Lake covers almost 13 hectares; the castle, located on a rocky island, is connected to the mainland by two causeways. Here, the water, island and building combine to create the town’s striking setting. This makes Flechtingen’s castle landscape different from a complex whose architecture is viewed independently of its surroundings.

The castle mill also adds to the cultural side of a visit. Its exhibitions cover geology and history, agricultural miniatures, milling technology and a miller’s room. The village church contains the burial sites of the Schenck family. The mill, church and castle each offer a different way to explore the town’s history.

Nature through the seasons

In spring, winter aconites, squills, anemones and crocuses bloom in the meadows of Flechtingen Park; the flowers are at their most abundant at this time of year. So if you would like to visit specifically to see these plants, spring is the ideal time. The nature around Flechtingen offers other points of interest, too: the local forests, meadows, streams and old quarries are home to red kites, black storks, woodpeckers and partridges, among other species.

You can connect the natural surroundings with a range of interests: taking in the spring blossoms or looking out for birds and their habitats. These highlights complement the architectural history, so your stay need not focus solely on the castle complex.

Activities and choosing accommodation

Activities for visitors in Flechtingen include boat hire, carriage rides and bowling. The Kneipp centre offers water treading, Kneipp showers, and arm and foot baths. The options cater to different interests—from time on the water to a carriage ride or a Kneipp treatment. Flechtingen lies on the route of the Aller-Elbe Cycle Path between Seggerde and Altenhausen.

When choosing accommodation, you can first consider which themes you would like to shape your stay: castle history, the lake, nature or Kneipp activities. This lets you base your decision on your own interests rather than assuming there is one best location for everyone.
