Accommodation in Wanzleben-Börde
Wanzleben-Börde offers a variety of reasons to visit: castle and church architecture, a distinctive townscape and a leisure pool. You can choose whether to focus your stay on architectural history or a day enjoying the water attractions. Those interested in historic Wanzleben will find a range of architectural details at the castle, church and market square; the pool offers a different kind of experience.
Wanzleben Castle and its architectural design
Wanzleben Castle is considered one of the largest lowland castles in Europe. It was built as a circular castle with double moats and ramparts. The Romanesque keep dates from the 13th century and is 30 metres high. The castle is a stop on the Romanesque Road. Guided tours are available by arrangement; check availability before your visit. This allows you to plan a visit to the site without assuming that guided tours are freely available.
Churches, routes and townscape
St. Jakobi in the town of Wanzleben is a three-aisled hall church with a Romanesque core and late Gothic additions. The two-storey town hall stands on the market square, whose striking shape is reminiscent of a trumpet. Wanzleben is also a stop on the Way of St. James from the Elbe to the Rhine. In Seehausen stands St. Paul's Church, considered the oldest church in the Magdeburg Börde and also located on the Romanesque Road. Guided tours there can be booked by arrangement with the Protestant parish. The route connections and different architectural styles give you several ways to shape a culturally focused stay.
A different way to spend the day: the leisure pool
The leisure pool in the town of Wanzleben has a 45-metre slide, a current channel and a water mushroom. Large sunbathing lawns and a catering facility round out the offerings. This makes water attractions and places to sunbathe another reason to visit, alongside the historic buildings. If you plan to visit the pool, check its opening and available facilities before setting out.
The Börde as a wider destination
The wider Börde destination offers a broader perspective on its landscapes and culture. The Börde district extends from the fertile Börde in the south, described as Germany’s largest continuous area of black earth, to the meadows and wetlands of the Drömling in the north. Wooded ridges and the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide, home to Europe’s largest contiguous linden forest, characterise the centre of the district. The Börde is also home to churches, monasteries, palaces, castles, museums and historic architectural monuments worth visiting; the Romanesque Road includes ten visitor sites in the district.
Hundisburg Castle offers a different architectural highlight in the Börde: it is one of the most significant rural Baroque palaces in Saxony-Anhalt and is distinguished by its historic gardens and parkland. Its Baroque garden showcases symmetry and detailed garden design. Another attraction is the listed industrial monument of the Hundisburg brickworks. The brickworks and technology museum include brick production using the hand-moulding method, a coarse ceramics workshop, a building materials manufactory and a carpentry workshop. The historic field railway offers a visitor ride of around two kilometres past historic kilns, a bucket-chain excavator and the former clay pit.
