With its renaturalised gravel lake, local history association and concert programme at St. Boniface Church, Ditfurt offers various reasons to explore the town. There is also a hiking trail nearby. This raises a practical question when planning your trip: should Ditfurt itself, with its water and culture, be the main focus, or are you primarily interested in the wider Harz travel destination?

Swimming at Ditfurt Gravel Lake

Renaturalised Ditfurt Gravel Lake is considered a natural bathing spot with excellent water quality, which may vary. There is a public bathing area on the north-western shore. Admission is free; swimming is at your own risk. Check local notices and conditions before swimming.

The lake is therefore a clear attraction for anyone who wants to include time by the water in their stay. This focus differs from a concert or an association event when planning your trip: conditions on site matter at the lake, whereas a specific cultural event may determine your travel dates.

Museums, Events and Concerts

The Ditfurt local history association runs three museums and organises talks, workshops, classic car gatherings and theatre events. The programme ranges from talks and workshops to classic car gatherings and theatre. If you want to plan your stay around a particular event, check its date before travelling.

St. Boniface Church in Ditfurt also offers its own cultural highlight: the renovated, heated church hosts an extensive concert programme. Together with the local history association’s activities, this offers a different way to spend your trip than a day by the water. Whether you are more interested in a museum, a talk, a gathering or a concert may influence when you plan to visit.

A Hiking Trail Nearby

A hiking trail to Quedlinburg runs north of the Bode and Zapfenbach rivers, in the area around the travel destination. This adds a separate hiking option nearby to the things to do in Ditfurt. Your choice of activities can therefore reflect different interests: a visit to the gravel lake, Ditfurt’s cultural offerings or a trail in the direction of Quedlinburg.

The Wider Harz Travel Destination

In the Harz, the focus expands to a larger landscape and hiking region. Harz National Park covers 24,732 hectares, around ten per cent of the entire Harz. The national park has 560 kilometres of signposted trails leading to particularly scenic viewpoints. Guided hikes and excursions are offered with rangers, experts, national park guides and national park forest guides. Eight visitor centres and national park information centres provide information about the park, hiking tips, exhibitions and film screenings.

One prominent landmark in the Harz is the Brocken: at 1,141 metres, it is the highest peak in the Harz and lies in the core zone of Harz National Park. The Brocken Railway offers a way to reach the summit by train. For hiking enthusiasts, the Harzer Wandernadel links 222 stamping stations across the Harz. Anyone who collects all 222 stamps earns the title “Harz Hiking Emperor”.

Geology and cultural history are also among the Harz’s attractions. The UNESCO Global Geopark Harz–Braunschweiger Land–Ostfalen includes the Harz; its visitor facilities include geopark information points, adventure trails, show mines, boulder gardens and museums. The Upper Harz Water Management System has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since August 2010. It comprises 107 surviving ponds, 310 kilometres of water channels and 30 kilometres of underground waterways.

Choose what to search for based on whether you mainly want to explore Ditfurt or are interested in the many attractions of the wider Harz travel destination.
