Kamern: Discover lakes, nature and the Elbe-Havel landscape
Accommodation in Kamern
Kamern appeals to travelers looking to combine water, wide-open landscapes and nature watching. Lakes, forests, meadows, fields and sandy elevations characterize the surrounding area. There are also floodplain forests, old river channels, smaller bodies of water and other lakes that provide waterbirds with nesting and resting places. In and around Kamern’s lake and Elbe-Havel landscape, you can cycle, hike, swim, fish or row. This means there are several ways to enjoy the outdoors side by side.
Lake Kamern: from the shore and the water
Lake Kamern is connected to the Havel via the Trübengraben. You can explore it by boat; a circular trail runs around the lake. This offers two different perspectives on the same body of water: from a boat, you experience the lake on the water, while the circular trail follows its shores. The ecology of its clear water is also part of the lake’s character: aquatic plants include water soldier, pondweeds and frogbit.
Lakes, shores and habitats for birds
The Kamern lake district comprises Lake Kamern and Lake Schönfeld. Wooded shores, fish-rich waters and its location in the Lower Havel Landscape Protection Area characterize the landscape. Birdlife is another highlight for nature enthusiasts: floodplain forests, old river channels, smaller bodies of water and lakes provide nesting and resting habitats for waterbirds. Birdwatching can therefore be combined with taking in the different bodies of water and the landscapes around them. If you prefer to explore on foot, you can include the circular trail around Lake Kamern in your plans.
Two views across the lowlands
The viewpoints offer contrasting perspectives, too. From the Weinberge viewpoint, you can look west toward the Elbe lowlands; from Lärchenberg, the view extends east toward the Havel lowlands. The Kamern Hills form a distinctive local ridge. If you are interested in the landscape, you can compare the two views: the Elbe lowlands on one side, the Havel lowlands on the other. Together with the lakes and sandy elevations, they make for a varied landscape of open water and expansive scenery.
On foot and by bike: two different scales
The lakeside circular trail and a longer bike tour are suited to different plans. In the wider Stendal travel region, the approximately 500-kilometer Altmark Cycle Route passes through Kamern, among other places, in the district of Stendal. This length refers to the regional circular route; the trail around Lake Kamern is a local option for hiking. If you are traveling by bike, Kamern may therefore appeal both as a place for its own landscapes and waterside experiences and as part of a longer route.
The Hedemicke and the legend of Frau Harke
At the entrance to Kamern stands the Hedemicke, a protected pine trunk of natural and historical significance associated with the legend of Frau Harke. This striking natural and cultural heritage offers something different from the lakes and viewpoints: alongside water and landscape, there is also a local tradition. If you are interested in stories passed down through generations, the Hedemicke adds a tangible link to the legend to your experience of Kamern.
