Discover Gelenau: Nature, Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Gelenau
Gelenau offers several ways to experience nature, outdoor activities and local history. A walk by the wildlife enclosure, a nature trail with information about the natural world, moving exhibits and active leisure options each offer something different. When planning your trip, it’s worth deciding in advance whether you’d rather spend time outdoors, include an attraction with clearly stated figures in your itinerary, or explore the history of the town.
Nature and trails as places to explore
Right next to the outdoor adventure pool is a 4-hectare wildlife enclosure with fallow deer. A walking trail loops around the grounds; several places to sit and a bridge overlooking the entire area make the circuit more enjoyable. The bridge offers a special vantage point, while the seating provides places to take a break along the way. If you want to focus on nature and the landscape, you can plan this area as the main focus of an outing.
The nature trail offers a different experience: its information boards introduce local flora and fauna, as well as the birdlife. It starts at the hiking and biking station, which is also the starting and finishing point for hikes and cycling tours. Many cycling and hiking trails pass through Gelenau and the surrounding area. You can choose between an educational trail with information boards and a wider range of walking and cycling routes. A 6 km walk through Gelenau also offers the chance to discover historic sites and places of interest, and to enjoy the landscape and nature.
Active experiences with different highlights
The observation tower is 27.5 m tall and can be reached via 136 steps. These figures make the climb a clearly defined activity; when planning, consider whether an activity involving stairs is suitable for your group. The Alpine Coaster offers a different kind of experience: it is 580 m long and reaches speeds of up to 40 km/h. The coaster is a permanent attraction, but its operating details vary by season. So check the information for your planned visit.
The outdoor adventure pool is also seasonal. Its facilities include a 42 m-long large water slide, a children’s paddling pool and a playground. This means that, in addition to the slide, there are activities specifically for children. If you’re planning a visit, check the latest opening information in advance.
Local history brought to life
The woodcarving exhibition features working carousels and a mechanical model of Karl Stülpner’s mountain. Movement is also part of the “Wheel of History”: the wheel depicts twelve scenes from Gelenau’s past and present, with the town’s founders shown in its centre. An electric motor turns the wheel, which has a diameter of 2.20 m, on two rollers.
The town’s history also includes its development into a centre of the textile industry in the 19th and 20th centuries. Spinning mills and knitting factories shaped this part of the town’s history. Together, the exhibition, the moving wheel and the history of the textile industry offer different perspectives, from mechanically operated exhibits to the development of a major economic sector.
