Waldhufen lies between the Königshain Hills and the Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape, a region rich in forests and ponds. The terrain around the town is predominantly characterised by gentle hills. Near Jänkendorf and Diehsa, Waldhufen reaches the Quitzdorf Reservoir, where the Schwarzer Schöps is dammed. Another landscape can be found near Thiemendorf: the village lies north of Hochstein in a two-kilometre-long valley in the Königshain Hills. The reservoir, rolling hills and valley therefore offer specific points of interest for different nature enthusiasts.

Cycling around Diehsa and the Quitzdorf Reservoir

Diehsa offers a special attraction for cyclists: it is home to the first cycling church in Lower Silesia, on the signposted Frog Cycle Route. It is open from May to October and offers various services for cyclists, tourists and visitors. Another option is a 20-kilometre cycling tour around the Quitzdorf Reservoir, which heads towards Diehsa. Stops along the way include a protected market square ensemble, the Gewandhaus with a small park, and a cycling church.

The cycling church in Diehsa is on the signposted Frog Cycle Route; the 20-kilometre reservoir tour is a separate option, heading towards Diehsa and taking in several cultural stops. This makes it possible to weigh up which focus you prefer without combining the two options into a single route.

Village churches with different architectural histories

The Church of St Ursula and St Gallus in Nieder Seifersdorf is a late Romanesque fortified church dating from the 13th century, surrounded by a sturdy wall. Together with the rectory, barns and defensive walls, it forms a medieval ensemble. Late Gothic paintings have been preserved inside; the painted single- and double-storey gallery depicts biblical scenes. The focus here is on both the walled complex and the preserved interior features of the church.

The church in Ullersdorf has a different architectural history: it acquired its present-day Renaissance appearance around 1629/1630. Compared with the medieval fortified church in Nieder Seifersdorf, the two locations offer different architectural highlights. Those who include church architecture in their travel plans can thus choose between a fortified medieval complex with paintings and a Renaissance appearance.
