Schönwölkau brings together traces of rural craft history, village churches from different periods of construction and a Baroque castle complex. In Badrina, milling history and the blacksmithing tradition stand side by side; in Hohenroda, there is also a post mill. The village churches in Mocherwitz and Brinnis offer their own architectural highlights. Crafts, architectural history and cycling appeal to different interests. When looking for accommodation, you can consider which of these aspects you would like to shape your stay.

Mills and Blacksmithing

The historic watermill in Badrina is the oldest documented facility of its kind in the Delitzsch area. Right next door, visitors can see a traditional rural blacksmith’s workshop with historic equipment and tools. The Old Smithy in Badrina also tells a story of different periods through its architectural history: it dates from the second half of the 18th century, although its core structure dates back to the 15th century. It belonged to a family of master blacksmiths for generations and was used as a farrier’s and wagon smithy until well into the 20th century.

In Hohenroda, the post mill has been open to visitors again since 1999. Its oven can be used for baking bread by prior arrangement. If you would like to include this activity in your plans, check the arrangements for booking locally in advance, as they may change. When planning a day out with the family, you can decide whether to focus together on milling technology and crafts or, instead, on architectural history and cycling.

Village Churches from Different Periods

Mocherwitz Village Church has a Romanesque core and dates back to the 11th century; alterations were made in 1579 and 1720. The building is made of rendered fieldstone and rubble masonry. Timber framing is also used in the upper part of the tower and in the chancel gable. The church has three bronze bells: one dates from the 14th century and two from 1881. Other features include a baptismal font from 1600, a Baroque organ from 1721 and a wooden reredos from 1892. The dates show how the building and its furnishings changed over the centuries.

Brinnis Village Church also has a Romanesque core. The chancel extension dates from 1518, while the raised nave and west portal date from 1557. The rendered fieldstone and rubble building has a three-sided chancel, buttresses and a rectangular west tower. Inside, its described features include a coffered plaster ceiling, single- and two-tier galleries, and a net vault in the chancel; most of the furnishings date from 1830. Comparing the churches brings their different construction phases and furnishing details into focus.

Schönwölkau Castle and Park

Schönwölkau Castle and Park comprise a large Baroque complex with four wings and an adjoining farmyard. The complex is considered one of Saxony’s most significant Baroque castles. Its architecture adds another cultural highlight alongside the history of rural crafts and the churches that have evolved over several centuries.
