Lichtenhain offers a range of travel experiences, from the history of its church and the flower festival in its current form, which dates back to 1963, to the Lichtenhain Waterfall and its enduring appeal for hikers, nature lovers and those seeking relaxation. If you’d like to explore the area, you can choose your own focus, from cultural history to experiences in nature. The stories and routes bring the options to life—from the church’s altarpiece to hikes starting at stops along the Kirnitzschtal Tram.

Waterfall, tram and hikes

Since the 19th century, the Lichtenhain Waterfall has drawn hikers, nature lovers and those seeking relaxation to the valley. At the same time, it is one of the few curiosities from the early days of tourism in Saxon Switzerland that has survived to this day. This makes it not only a destination for outings, but also a remarkable part of the region’s tourism history.

The historic Kirnitzschtal Tram has connected Bad Schandau with the Lichtenhain Waterfall since 1898. Its eight-kilometre, single-track route ends at the waterfall. Each of its nine stops is a starting point for hikes into the rocky landscape of Saxon Switzerland National Park. You can set out on hikes from the tram stops or choose the Lichtenhain circular trail, which starts and ends at the waterfall.

You can reach the waterfall on bus route 241 or by taking the Kirnitzschtal Tram. From the Lichtenhainer Wasserfall stop, it is about a three-minute walk. As transport information may change seasonally, check the timetable before travelling.

A church with a long history

The earliest reliable record of a church in Lichtenhain dates from around 1346. The church took on its present form during renovations in 1696 and 1697. These two dates mark different historical reference points: the early record of a church at this location and the creation of its present form.

One special feature is the altarpiece. It depicts the scene in which Abraham is about to sacrifice his own son as proof of his faithfulness to God, before an angel stops him at the last moment. Anyone interested in religious imagery will find a specific example in the altarpiece.

The flower festival as a cultural tradition

The Lichtenhain Flower Festival has been held in its current form since 1963. Alongside the church’s historic architectural and artistic details, it offers another glimpse into local tradition. Cultural experiences thus complement the hikes and nature outings associated with the waterfall and the Kirnitzschtal Tram stops.
